Punto 55s (MK1) Clutch Problem

I recently bought my punto from a local dealer, and typical to most things
its developed a clucth problem as soon as the warranty runs out.

The problem is its very difficult to get it into 1st and reverse, checking
the clutch travel I found the travel to be around 175mm, Mr hanes said it
should be 140mm.  Adjust the clutch I thought; I have the hydraulically
operated mechanism that Mr Haynes said cannot be adjusted.

Is there any way the clutch can be adjusted or does this mean I may have
to invest in a new one?

Thanks Guys and Girls

Was it there when you bought it, or did it suddenly develop. Getting into
first
problem is not uncommon and can be gearbox rather than clutch. The
clutch only separates the engine from the gearbox, which if it travels
freely  (that is, the operating shaft isn't binding or the clutch release
bearing
noisy and knackered) it either does or it doesn't. Replacing the clutch
might
not fix it, and it's not a cheap job.

But there should be a bleed screw on the back end of the actuating cylinder?
Depending on the age of the car the fluid might also be like brown Oxtail
soup, not uncommon with s/h cars that have never had the clutch or brake
fluid changed since it left the factory. Also check the engine mounts, and
that it has not had a major shunt. I once had this problem where the engine
gearbox assembly were out of place in the engine compartment. It only
affected first and reverse, other gears were fine, just had to take off in
2nd
and park in supermarket bays where you could drive out forward.
