I have a check engine light that keeps coming on/off. The code was checked
as a "lazy" O2 sensor. Should I have it replaced, or not? Also how much
(typically) doe this procedure cost. I had the blend door problem fixed 1.5
years ago, and you guys were right on he money with that fix...$1000.00.
Thanks,
Marty

Yes.

Cost should be price of sensor plus minimum labor time for shop. Say
$100 for sensor and $75 minimum labor charge; i.e., $175.

Or you could do it yourself if you have the time. On my 96 4d 2wd, it
took me an evening after work to replace all sensors except one. That
one as located in 2 feet behind the converter on top of the exhaust
pipe. Not much room for hands up there.

I also have a 96, but it is the V8 AWD. Any idea where the sensors are on
this beast?

I took a brief look in my Haynes manual. It didn't mention that the AWD
is different from the 2wd. So, there are 4 sensors. 2 downstream
from the cat. and 2 more downstream in the center of the vehicle. I'll
take another look in the manual just to make sure.
Also, they mention getting an O2 socket wrench (similar to a spark plug
socket). Again, I'll recheck.

Yeah... well I think you mean there are 2 UPSTREAM, before the cats and 2
more downstream (after the cats)
all 4 are pretty easy to get to .... They'll run around $60.00 at the
local parts store..

Hey there guys. I did not realize how many sensors were on a vehicle. After
reading all your responses, I have to re-check and locate any sensors I
may have missed. I replaced one oxygen sensor this afternoon. It took me
about 20 minutes to replaced. I had to borrow AutoZone's special tool to
remove the sensor. I the sensor cost me $55.00. The sensor is located near
the fuel filter. Good luck.

odd place for an 02 sensor, you have a '97 V8 Explorer right? The fuel
filter should be inside the left frame rail and all the 02 sensors are
on the exhaust system in the center and right side.

I don't want to go OT here but I recently had a similar post (thanks again
to Jim and the others who replied). Bank 2 O2 sensor bad- '98 Mountaineer
V-8. I couldn't find a local garage to take it in the next day or two and
since I had a weekend road trip coming up I broke down and went to a not so
reputable Ford dealer across the street from where I work hoping they would
give me a legit fix. They came back with a quote of $583. They wanted to
service my 'throttle bodies' and replace another sensor. When I asked what
the problem with the other items was they told me they just like to change
the other stuff to be safe. It sounded like bullshit so I asked around
other mechanics agreed. In the end I figured I'd wait to get it in with
someone I trusted and two weeks later the check engine light turned itself
off. Should I be concerned?
