Hello all, I have a 96 model Ford Explorer XLT with the 4.0 SOHC motor. I
find that when ever I go on long trips and am doing around 110kms/h (I am
from Australia so excuse the Kms instead on the Mph) I have the overdrive
light come on and flashes. Once this happens the transmission shifts very
hard and the only way to stop the light flashing is by dissconecting the
battery and resetting the computer. I have been told by a ford technition
that the Torque Converter is slipping when it gets hot which then sends a
code to the computer warning of this. He suggested to change the torque
converter to a stronger one that will cost me $800AUD fitted. Any other
suggestions??? Cheers David

I had the same thing happen on mine O/D light on and off. I would suggest
changing the transmission fluid. As it turns out, when the fluid heated
up, dirt was tripping the O/D sensor. That same dirt ended up fouling the
whole transmission which I had to replace.
