I am getting the above Explorer in a couple of days and wondered
what the owners manual recommended for engine oil.

...except *please* don't put thoise orange oil filters on it (or
anything else for that matter).  Use that number to cross reference to a
real oil filter, like a Purolator, Motorcraft or AC Delco

Personally, I use a K&N oil filter and synthetic 5W30. It's all that she's
ever known. The regular Fram filters I am unsure about but in the past (pre
K&N availability) I did however use the Fram extra guard, which I have never
had any complaints.

97 XLT with 86000 and still goin strong and lookin like it should be still

Gentlemen,

I've done some research to try and find a full length oil filter for the
5.0 V8 Explorer/Mountaineer '96-'01 to replace the .5 quart capacity
filter put on by the factory.

We worked closely with the area NAPA parts outlet and were able to review
specs for the correct face and metric threads required for these engines.
From this we were able to come up with a full length filter, NAPA PN 1087
or WIX PN 551087. This filter will give you a full 1 quart capacity and
add .5 quart extra to the engines available oil supply.

Would this also work with the 4.0 liter OHV V6?

Interesting work, what I get out of this is that oil filters change
all the time and my favorite brand may be made by different suppliers
at different times.  I know from experience that companies are always
looking for lower cost alternate suppliers and frequently change
suppliers, so every part is likely to change over time.

I would think that brand name suppliers would have a minimum spec on oil
filter design and performance. Thngs like micron size of the filter medium,
bonding methods, bypass valve placement, anti-drainback valve. If someone
tells you their filter meets OEM specs, it better.

Motorcraft used to market at least three filters for Ford engines..... the
FL1-A is the only one I see lately, the FL1-HP was a high pressure variant
and the CFL1 which competed with filters like the PH8 and the like. The
CFL-1 had less paper, glued pleat seam and the bypass valve was at the
bottom - no anti-drainback valve was fitted. If we performed warrranty
engine repairs and installed a CFL-1 filter (instead of an FL1-A) the
warranty claim woul be denied by Ford. At those times, oil and filter were
customer pay items (not sure lately) but the filter we fitted to the motor
HAD to be an FL1-A.

While most of what's inside a filter can't be seen from the outside, it's
easy to spot the bypass valve location. Chances are that if the bypass valve
is at the threaded end of of the filter, the rest of the filter will be of
decent quality.
