Jim, what is your take on ceramic disc pads for my '97 EB, with
slightly over 50k on the odometer ?
Jim Warman - 24 Feb 2005 07:51 GMT
Ceramic pads are generally less noise prone than other substrates and
produce less dust (the dust they do produce is quite a bit lighter than
other materials making what dust there is harder to see).

The few product info sheets I have seen seem to recommend NOT using ceramic
pads if you tow. Not sure if that's an issue with heat loading
characteristics or wear problems in high loading.

I am not sure if they require any special rotor finish... I would think that
the usual non-directional finish should be more than adequate.

My personal choice is good quality semi-metallic pads..... decent service
life, quiet if broken in according to the manufacturers requirements and
good performance in panic stops or towing applications.

HTH.

Thanks Jim, car is going in for a lube job and pads in the next 2 or
three days. I'll see what the price/performance ratio is between the
semi-metallics and the ceramics is and then make a choice.  There is
no towing involved, vehicle is a NYC and suburbs car.  The most
"sport" in th SUV name is to carry my fishing equipment to the party
boat or inshore and offshore fishing.

I had the brakes rebuilt a couple years ago on my '99.  The
independent mechanic I use for stuff like this recommended ceramic in
front and metallic in back.  I followed his advice and have had no
problems with the brakes, noise, dust or otherwise.  I do not tow, so
don't know anything about towing performance.
