1992 explorer

Why does my 92 explorer hesitate or skip at 55? Is it the timing chain, or
what else should I be looking at?  thanks

When the timing chain wore out on my '92 there was a very noticeable ping
and rattle on acceleration and that was at any speed.  It turned out that it
was off by two teeth!!  That was at about 265,000 miles.  So far very few of
timing chains have failed from what I've read (on 91-94).

When it started hesitating/skipping it was actually slipping in the
transmission.  How many miles do you have?  Is it an auto trans?  Has it
been replaced yet?

On mine the connectors on the vacuum cluster on the intake manifold started
popping off as a result of contamination by transmission fluid caused by a
faulty vacuum modulator in the trans.

it's got 180,000 on it and the transmission has already been rebuilt.
(about 25,000 mile ago). There is no ping and so far it's been a good
runner. when I'm around the 55 mile per hour range it acts like it's either
getting a gas hesitation or a spark hesitation. The plugs were changed
about 6,000 miles ago and the fuel filter was changed at the same time..

Try plug wires.  My '92 had the same symptoms, sounded/felt like a lean
miss or a/t slip, since it would sometimes drop out of OD when it
missed.  Problem was most commom when towing/under load.  Wires are
cheap.  I get maybe 50-60k between swaps on OEM.  I just change them
with the plugs now.

thanks for all of the reply's people..the problem is fixed. The plug wires,
even tho only six months old, were arcing on the manifold..
