 1999 XLS  V6 automatic.

When I put the truck in park yesterday the shift indicator did not go all
the way to park (P).  It still shifts fine but the indicator is one position
off  when in PARK= R on indicator,  when in REVERSE = N on indicator, and
etc.
 Is this something that can be fixed in one afternoon or should be left
alone?   If so how?
