On a 2002. I've got some kind of substance (car wash wax maybe?) on
the exterior windshield that makes night driving in the rain a
significant safety issue. New wipers haven't fixed it. I've tried
several auto-type glass cleaners with no success. Recommendations?
Solvents, ultra-fine steel wool, BonAmi, etc? I heard all these over
the years, but don't want to damage the glass.
Help. TIA.

If it is some sort of residue, a cleaner high in ammonia (all safety
precaustions apply) should do the trick. It wouldn't hurt to clean the
inside carefully with the same stuff since many interior plastics may
"off-gas". At the same time. inspect the outside surface closely to ensure
that the effect isn't being caused by sandblasting.

I am not sure car wax would cause such a problem, I have been waxing my
windows since the 80's and have never had a problem with visability issues.
The wax works wonders for driving in the rain much like Rain X does, the
water just runs right off and at times you really don't need wipers to see
well. I started waxing because dusting off my show car was easier on the
paint but left marks on the glass, so I thought what is causing the problem
on the glass and why is the paint easier? I figured that the wax was making
the dusting easy so I waxed the glass. When I had to dust the car off before
the people came in the whole thing looked great. didn't have to wash the
glass every day.

Hello,
I used that Rain-x window washer fluid (washer fluid with Rainx built
in) and although I liked the way it kept the Wshild clean and water
sheeted off, it did seem to leave a film on my WS. I never had that
problem when using just regular apply with a rag Rainx. Use BonAmi and
replaced my washer fluid with good results.

I had the same problem with RainX. It was great when rain was fairly
heavy, but misting rain seemed to smear on the windshield and never
wipe clean. I stopped using it on the windshield for that reason,
still use it on the side and back.

Bon-Ami Cleaning Powder (not the same as Bon-Ami Cleaning Cleanser) will do
the job. The Cleaning Powder is sold at Ace Hardware. If you can't find it,
use the cleanser with plenty of water.
