About 3 months ago, I had a problem with the Explorer starting.  At that
time, it would crank, but not catch.  I replaced the fuel pump relay and the
problem went away.

Now it cranks, catches, and then immediately dies.  Time after time.  I
tried pumping the gas, not pumping the gas...  And I've switched around the
relays.

All ideas and suggestions appreciated....

Does it stay running with your foot on the gas? If it does, then you
could have a problem with the IAC valve.

OK, I was able to start it by keeping the gas going, but when I take my foot
off the gas it idles down, gets to the point where it is running rough, then
dies.  Does that sound like an IAC valve?  What is the IAC, where is it
located and can I easily replace it myself?  Thanks!

I'm not sure where it is on the OHV V6, since I have the SOHC, but it
should be a cylindrical looking object that is on the intake manifold,
has electrical wires. On my engine it is directly on top of the intake
manifold under the plastic "SOHC" shroud. It could be in the same
location on your engine. Maybe someone with the OHV can help in this
NG.
In any event, they usually get dirty preventing them from working
properly. Just remove it,clean out the valve with a solvent like WD 40,
then put it back and it should work. If it still does not work, then
maybe its time for a new one.

OK, did some hunting on the net and found a picture of what the IAC looked
like.  The IAC on a 4.0 '96 is on the drivers side of the intake, no need to
remove any covers to get at it.  I replaced it and now it is running fine.
Thanks so much for the advice.  This is a great group!!!
The part was $43 at Advance Auto Parts.
