A friend has a 2002 Eddie Bauer that she likes, except for the front seats. They worsen her back problems. Adding a back rest and seat pad have not helped. She is at the point of either replacing the seats, or replacing the car. There are other posts in this newsgroup on the same subject, but I saw no good solutions. Are there aftermarket seats that would probably work well, or can her seats be exchanged with those of other years/models? She is tall, if that matters. Actually the Recaro website doesn't describe the seats nearly as well as some vendor sites. You are right, they are not cheap -- about $1200 - $1500 each for the least expensive seat that "looks right," plus installation... Still, might be worth it. Thanks. She is tall, if that >>matters. I, too, hate the driver's seat in my 2002. As someone said, you sit on them, not in them. They are terrible compared to the seats in my 96 Explorer. I did some research about Recaro seats, and it was not a pretty picture. They are primarily designed as racing seats, and they're pretty good at that. Everyday driving is a different story. I heard tales of muscle cramps, pinched nerves and poor padding. If you're looking to replace the seats, look elsewhere. That said, I have not yet found another source for good aftermarket replacement seats. I may end up getting rid of my Explorer as the solution. Hi Jonah; The Recaro idea was shot down tonight because of the expense. Anyway, I'm not sure what to think of a company that actually sells a seat called the "Furious!" ( http://www.speedwaremotorsports.com/seat/furious.asp ). Apparently Recaro is pursuing the lucrative market of road rage maniacs. The main ideas I have now are (1) contacting Ford and asking for suggestions, (2) turning a car upholstery shop loose on the old seats, (3) finding something(?) on eBay, and (4) checking wrecking yards for Explorers with better seats. The problem with the latter two is that I don't know if any seats besides the originals will fit the mounting rails (or whatever they are called), and improvised seat mounts are probably dangerous. Not sure if you have leather or cloth, we'll assume leather. I have seen leather seats from the older (96 -01) explorers for 300.00 a pair, very good condition, at the junkyard. Lots of rollovers out there. You could also think of BMW 535/740 used seats. More, but nice. Lumbar adjusters, some heated, all electric I don't consider remounting seats dangerous. I have done quite a few, cause I like to sit high behind the wheel. Just use good quality bolts. A question though - don't the newer ex's have a sensor in the seat so the airbag will not blow if there is no one in it or a child is in it? I don't know the answer, just a question to avoid a potential pitfall. Ross; Good suggestions. So far I've found the name of a good local upholstery shop, and learned from a guy in the parts dept of a local Ford dealer than seats from any year with the same body style would probably fit without modification. I will call some junkyards next week, see what's available. I'll look for that airbag sensor if I replace the seats, thanks. Best seats I had in an Explorer were the ones in my '92 EB. They even had inflatable bolsters on the sides. Seats in my '99 were not as good as the '92 and seats in my '05 are even worse.
