On an '02 Mountaineer I have what looks to be an automatic antenna that
won't come up. Any advice on how to get it to pop up (other than turning
on the car, I can hear it now) so I can get better reception. TIA

A common failure is breakage of the toothed plastic ribbon attached to the mast. If you can hear the motor grinding but nothing moves, that's probably what it is. Take the unit out from under the fender, open it, and things will be quite obvious. The mast is replaceable - about $25 at the dealer (seen them for much less on ebay). If you are replacing it, make sure to feed the ribbon facing the right way.

I don't believe the '02 and later Mountaineers had a power antenna even as
an option. My guess is that you have the stub of the screw on antenna that
was screwed off!
