Our car has the front and rear a/c units.

The other day a solenoid in the left rear quarter panel started
clicking. This is where the rear fan, etc. is located. It sounds like
a very large clock ticking

You can turn the rear unit on with either the front control or the
rear control and the clicking starts. Turn off - no clicking.

The fan runs at all speeds and the rear unit seems to be cooling.

Anyone know what this is and how to fix it?

About 35,000 miles on the car.

Had the same problem.  I bet you don't have any heat in the rear unit.  The
blend door motor plastic shaft has broken.  The dealer can fix the problem
for a "few" bucks.

Thanks Ron, for your info.

"Plastic" usually breaks.

I assume you had yours fixed? Mind saying how much they charged. We
got an extended warranty - maybe that will cover it?

I had this same thing on my 2002. I took apart the left rear cargo area
to get at it. The blend door was not broken, but the actuator that opens
and closes the door was going crazy and that's what was making the noise.
I discovered I could get heat or cold, but that the actuator wouldn't let
the door stay in one position. So when it got to cold, I unplugged the
connector and there it stays. I seldom need heat back there, and when I
do, there are still the vents in the back bottom of the center console. I
think I remember reading about this and there may be a real fix that
involves rewiring the circuit, but for me, this hasn't been needed.
However, this may be covered by your extended warranty, especially if its
a factory issued one. Ask  your dealer. I would.
