Hello group,
I have not been here for a while, but I have received very helpful
information before. So far the winner was the advice about replacing my IAC
valve.
So here's a more mundane question. The high pressure lifter(s) that hold
your hood open are not doing it anymore. Are they serviceable? Or must
they just completely be replaced. If the latter, does that include the
hinge they are mounted on?
Thanks for any help.
P.S. I've never been very good at body work. The only thing I hate more is
household plumbing.

I replaced the ones on my '99XLS about two years ago. I used after market
ones from Advance. They are holding the hood up anymore. However they were
easy to put on with the help of a "hood holder person".

They usually wear down in a few years and are not serviceable. You can find
aftermarket brands in auto part stores. They will order your size if not in
stock. From my experience aftermarket is no better or worse than OEM.
Replacement is very easy and requires no tools, except for a small
screwdriver to pop the retainer. Prop the hood with a with a 2x4 or ask
someone to hold it.
