There is a Noise thump from rear of 99 explorer sport after fast breaking. 70,000 miles. If you stop slow it does not happen. If you break fast then ounce you stop completely something in the back area gos a load thump. What could it be? Thank You very much for any reply :)

This is probably not your same problem, but I remember once a guy came into
the dealership I worked at with an explorer and a knocking noise in the
rear. Turns out he had a mud clump formed on the other end of the gas cap
tether up in the wheel well.

Drive shaft pop, Ford in the old days would put a relief valve in the
front yoke to stop this but it has not been needed for years. As the
drive line comes together after a panic stop the drive shaft will snap
back when the vehicle comes to rest, all normal.

...how much fuel did you have in the tank?  If it's less than half
full, you might of just heard the fuel sloshing forward after a hard
stop.  That would explain it only happening when you brake hard.
