Hi, I Have a 1994 thats still real nice. I need a tranmission flush. I
went in don-olson the care repair place and tire distributer and asked
about their flush. I told them I need the pan scaped out. The guy said
that the machine they have will just keep on running and filtering
untill, its all clear. he said I have nothing to worry about.
Should I do this? or should I go somewhere and get the tansmission pan
scaped too?
Thanks!
"Scaped"?????
I'll say go ahead with the flush as long as they don't use any of those
wierd chemical cleaners (making it a fluid exchange, I suppose). I used to
be a big advocate of flushes but I'm caught between the devil and the deep
blue sea, now. If you are presently experiencing any transmission concerns,
a flush will more than likely make things worse..... If, however (and be
brutally honest), it is simply time for a trans service, then have the fluid
exchange done and the filter replaced..... I'm not sure if you should have
the pan scaped or not..... almost sounds as painful as a vasectomy or a root
canal....
The A4LD has a checkered history (at least I don't think you have the R
series trans).... the higher gears "generally" exhibit problems or there may
be initial engagement concerns.... both seem to be precursors of money not
yet spent. I firmly believe it is a result of using the OD setting when D
would be a wiser choice but thats up for discussion. My 92 with 175K km is
showing no problems and I select my gear carefully.
Your transmission holds roughly 11 litres of fluid.... expect the shop to
use much more than that to affect a total fluid change.

Jim Warman,
Thanks for your detailed reply. I was running a fever when I typed
that, still am, hence the typing errors. I wouldnt want to be scaped
either.
I beleive my tansmission is a type "T". With less than 80K miles on
it. Yet, My "reverse" is 'tacky' and my gear selector needle is far
off center from the overdrive icon. It seems to be moving farther away
too, to the right I think.
Again, thanks fro your words, I was hoping to hear from the pro. good
stuff.
Thank you.

The gear selector indicator is a simple underdash adjustment.... there are
two very fine cables connecting the functioning bits and they do break after
lengthy service...
Sorry, but 'tacky' doesn't describe reverse operation too well from this far
away.... in reverse (and manual low) transmission line pressure goes high
and may reveal engine performance problems. At the same time, we remember
that the A4LD does have a "history".
If you have the transmission serviced, remind the shop to use the correct
year service manual.... somewhere in the 90s, Ford changed the pitch on the
band adjustment screws..... using the wrong spec will have bands either
adjusted too tight or too loose...
