Yep, sounds pretty close. I'm glad someone spoke up :) PATS keys only
came in with smartshield - which is AUII onwards.

Dont question it - ford says that the key transmits a signal in AUII
onwards (Smartshield). I have seen this disproved - but who is to argue
with FoMoCo ?

Yeah, youre on the right track. Speaking from Smartlock experience (and
i believe smartshield is similar, except the addition of the PATS keys)
there is an infrared receiver and transmitter inside the lock assembly,
which are placed within range when the correct key is inserted and
turned to the ignition position. When they are in range, the unique code
stored in the igition barrel is transmitted and reaches the smartlock
module (inside the BEM). If the BEM recieves the expected code, it will
allow you to start the car. If not, the car will be immobilised as the
BEM controls the starter relay and he ECU relies on the BEM being in an
mobile state to operate spark and fuel (for those who are running
straight gas, this doesnt affect you).
There is a procedure for the BEM to learn new ignition codes, which of
course would be required if you change your ignition barrel.
Slightly related - the keyfobs (remotes) can be added (or removed) from
your smartlock modules memory. This needs to be done after relearning
new ignition codes. Up to 4 remotes can be programmed.
There is plenty of smartlock and smartshield information including
procedures and wiring diagrams at www.fordmods.com
I'm currently in the middle of fitting EL ECU, BEM and Ingition barrel
into my pre-smartlock EB falcon... I can assure you smartlock does quite
a good job of stopping your car from being hotwired :D
