The head can be stapled or stitched by a head reconditioning
firm. When you say #3 piston moves more do you mean laterally
(back and forth) or vertically (up and down) and by how many mm.

PS it does depend where in the head the crack is too. If it's in
the wrong place it may be unfixable.

I had a Morris Major head welded once,...what a disaster it leaked worse
than before, but with todays advances it maybe worth-while, tho a
second-handy which has been crack-tested would be better if you have the
time to find one and the money to get it tested.
Those engines had a tendency to slap a bit when worn, so some top land wear
where you can move the piston a fair bit is relatively common in them.

If i lay the head with the valve surfaces facing upwards, the crack starts
near the exhaust valve and extebds towards the top edge roughly 4 mm in a
slight arc.

If that is where it is; it's time to look for a new head.

Evening folks;
I picked up a damn good second hand head for my
escort today, but refused to pay till a local engine reconditioner checked
for any cracks so after waiting for 3 hours, all is ok no cracks cost me
$100.00 all up. SO thanx for all the help and such next project is to renew
the rings and bearings.
