Are you sure it's the alternator and not something else?
> What should a new alternator & installation cost for an ED Falcon 6cyl?
No idea on cost but they are relatively easy to replace. On a relatively
clean engine, that hasn't been mangled by backyard experts, the changeover
should take less than an hour. I suspect a mechanic would charge for the
whole hour so, say $50-60 plus the part itself.
> How much cheaper are reco ones?
Normally much cheaper but the quality can vary from "reco black" (simple
repaint/clean of an old but working altenator) to a full overhaul with
whatever new parts were deemed necessary.
My only thoughts are that most reco alternators were reco'd because
something was wrong with them in the first place. If you can afford it buy
the new part but second hand will suffice if the saving is there.

RACV guy's opinion... seemed logical, battery was getting 12v accross
the terminals with the engine on. I tried cleaning the
terminals/connectors as well, didn't seem to help.
What else are you thinking it might be?

Good to hear, thanks for the info.

Hmm, shall have to see what the price difference is before making a
choice. Thanks for the info.

ED Falcon was the last model fitted the Australian built Bosch alternator. I
suggest you contact your local Bosch authorised service agent and discuss
the options with him

Would an auto-elec not be a better idea?

Willdo if I have too.

I have no idea, I'm no mechanic/auto elec. Just know it's not providing
the volts it's meant too.

How scary? :-S
Thanks for the reply.

I don't think I have the skills to do it myself, but it is an option to
try I suppose :-( Thanks for the opinion.

You do, it's very easy, just disconnect the battery first! The only part that would require any skill is how tight to make the belt.

You've got more confidence in my mechanical abilities than I deserve, i
think :-)
Ok, I probably could do it... but I'd need to find the tools, learn how
to remove/righren the belts, source the alternator, perform the job, and
then hope my inexperience hasn't meant I've stuffed something up.
By working for the hours I'd be stuffinf around, I'd make enough money
to cover paying the auto-elec :-)

Matt
For anyone who cares, or for someone searching Google Groups in the future:
I got my current one reconditioned, it cost $200 approximately in parts
(the rectifier was buggered too, which was $110 out of the $200), plus
$130 in labour). Comes with a 12 month warranty.
I don't know if the price is great or not, but I was very impressed by
the friendliness & service of the place who did it for me: Steadfast
Automotive on Riversdale Road in Surrey Hills, Melbourne.
Cheers,
Matt

Argh, reckon I could've made that more confusing? Damn misplaced bracket.
Total cost $330 - $130 labout, $200 parts.

Hey Matt,
That sounds fair and about the average price most places charge, hope it all
works okay now.

It is, and I'm happy (as one can be when they just dropped $330 into car
repairs).
Thanks for the tip.
Cheers,
Matt
Well all I can say is that my alternator was stuffed in my EB, and I
replaced the thing myself for a miserable $160
