AU series 1 compared to series 2

Hello,

I am less than a week away from buying an AU fairmont.
I want a series II but can't seem to find many in the paper or on carpoint
etc that are private.
I have found various series 1 fairmonts in realy good condition but am a
little unsure if I should go with that.

What differences are there besides dual airbags, mags, and six stacker?
Are there any mechanical faults in the series1 that were fixed in the series
2?

Did any of the AUs ever come out with a color coded front grill? I have
found one but am not sure if it has been smashed in the front or not. Could
this be an after market grill?

Is there any common faults that I should look out for?
I know the one about the rear door trims peeling away from the window and
the front doors sagging. I'll still buy a Firmont but I just want to know
what to look out for.

SII got a sandwiched firewall to improve NVH, and importantly got dual
piston front brakes as the AU I's weren't the best. IIRC 16" tyres
became std too.

There was also 2 model SI's, main difference iirc was a slight
lowering of the suspension and an uprated brake booster and/or master
cylinder.

Other changes mostly were to the base models, the centre dash pod was
squared off on the bottom, new knobs/buttons and a bit of silver on
them and front power windows std. Forte's got the raised bonnet and
new grille. XR's got a new body kit and XR8 got a bump in power.

I really dont think much was done to either of the Monties.
