Hi Group my old Fairlane 10/93 V8 Transmission has suddenly lost top
gear Car has done 165,000 Klms I have just spent $$$$ on it is it time
to exchange it for a rebuilt one ? Can some one recommend where to buy
an exchange unit I have been quoted $3300 in Darwin seems a bit dear
Thanks in Advance
Taxman - 27 Apr 2004 11:25 GMT
lost top gear, or its in limp home mode, IE stays in 1:1 3rd no matter what.

Many things can cause limp home mode to be activated, even dodgy wiring, I'd
not be jumping to that expensive conclusion straight away, find out what
error codes the ecu is trying to tell you, if any.

Hows your speedo, jumping around like crazy?? a buggered speedo transducer
will sometimes cause this to happen too.

No the speedo is fine the only thing I noticed was the GREEN POWER light
on the dash started blinking then stopped the transmission feels a bit
sluggish from first to second as well Reverse is good could it be just a
solenoid or something simple like that?

My Transmission is slow to change from First to Second and stays in 3rd
gear BUT when I slow down to say 80 klms an hour and change it from
Drive to 3rd it does change back but when I change back to drive again
it does not seem to click into overdrive just sends the Temp gauge sky
high any ideas ? I have recently replaced the Extension housing and
replaced the Fluid and Filter
2000 klms ago
Thanks in Advance

It simply means that there's something up with it, and he'll need to get it
looked at.

How the f.ck you can detirmine that it's rooted from a single flashing light
is beyond me pal :)

Noddy.

So that's your defining logic?

Don't give up your day job, buddy.....

John, get yourself to a transmission shop (not a Ford dealer as they don't
work on tranny's), or at the very least have a look at the fault codes. If
it was a sudden failing it is likely to be either a sensor fault, a solenoid
fault or a loom fault. Not mechanical - unless perhaps you have been towing
big things without a trans cooler fitted or have dumped all the fluid.

You did refill it with TQ95 - not Dexron?

I was told to use Dexron Automatic Transmission Fluid it is still clean
and does not smell burnt at all I guess I better take in to the Auto
transmission Shop which is 130 klms away,Because it happened all of a
sudden I was hoping it is something simple!
Thank you everyone for your help anyway (:)
How much would I be looking at paying for a rebuilt exchange unit
bearing in mind it is a V8.
TIA

There's your problem.

Whoever told you to fill it with Dexron is an idiot that needs to be hit in
the head with a hammer, as the Ford 4 speed autos' use *TQ-95* fluid
specifically. Go to your local parts store, buy yourself a 5 litre bottle of
*TQ-95*, drain the Dexron out of your trans and refill it with the *correct*
fluid.

It'll more than likely be fine, but it might take a couple of drain &
refills to get it all out.

Here's a tip: If you're not familiar with model specifics, buy a service
manual, as doing the wrong thing like this can cost you a shitload of money.
The average rebuild price of a 4 speed like yours is around 1500 bucks, and
you'd *hate* to think you had to spend that kind of dosh just because you
were ignorant enough to put the wrong fluid in it :)

Noddy.

What Noddy said -  The transmission actually holds about 14 litres of TQ95
in the lines, cooler and torque converter. If you want, the only real way to
get all the Dexron out in one hit is to do a total flush, where they drop a
line off the cooler and connect a machine in-line which pumps new fluid in
and draws old fluid out. The better trans shops are able to do this. Given
the cost of a rebuild on the BTR box I wouldn't take any half measures.

At least give the bill for the flush to the dick who said use Dexron. I cant
believe that.

And do go get that manual.

Most auto trans specialists will rebuild yours for around that money, or
sell you a change over unit. If you get quoted much more than that, then
look around.

Your phone book will have plenty of names of such places in your local
area...

Noddy.

I am in Darwin and have been quoted $3300  Exchange there are
only two Automatic Transmissions Workshops in Darwin so I will be
looking at buying one south any recommendations?

John, is it really stuffed? Have you changed the fluid back and looked up
the fault codes yet? It's quite easy to do.

Have a look at this :

Also - go to www.fordmods.com and search on transmission.

$3,300 is a bit rich.

Just to add another theory: if a transmission has had the wrong ATF poured
in, it is unlikely the bands or clutches are rooted as this would be
accompanied by poor gear-changes due to incorrect pressure causing  poor
valve body operation and lots of noise. This didnt happen as I read the
original post.

Sounds like the trans needs to have all the Dexron removed,..not a
multi-kilo$- rebuild operation..
