Vibration and Droning.

My 2001 AU2 SR sedan is now approaching 100,000kms. (had it since new).
Although it's been a pretty good car thus far, I'm still being annoyed by
high frequency vibrations at slow speeds (40-50km/h) and a droning/cyclic
humming at cruising speeds (100km/h). This extremely irritating phenomenon
occurs when there are at least two passengers in the back and it seems to be
worse when there is extra weight (luggage) in the boot. I have not been able
to find a cause nor cure for it after many discussions with my local dealer,
mechanics and various internet forums.
So far, in attempts to fix it, the tailshaft has been replaced, the
front-end checked and all found to be within spec, the shockers inspected
and new tyres fitted all 'round. No difference. I'm now wondering if the
exhaust system has something to do with it?? Is this possible? I ask this
question because I was thinking of fitting a performance exhaust system to
it, but I am concerned that the 'droning' noise will be exacerbated.
Anyway, at the end of this year I will have to decide whether to keep it or
sell it. The main reason for selling it will be because of the problems
mentioned above. After all, it has been a good car to me in all other
respects.
This post is essentially One last effort to obtain a satisfactory remedy to
this problem. If I can fix it for sure I may just hang on to the car for a
few more years.
Has anyone else experienced this with their Falcon? If so, how did you fix
it?
Any suggestions most welcome.

Is it possible the exhaust it touching/rattling against suspension/body?
Could explain why it only happens when you have rear passengers as the
rear will be lower.

Cheers,
Matt

Thanks for the suggestion Matt. The exhaust system has been inspected and is
not touching anywhere and although the rubber mounts are the original ones,
they look like they're all in good nick.
I keep suspecting the drive train is responsible somehow. The frequency of
the vibrations suggest so. Sometimes the vibration can be felt quite severe
through the steering wheel and passengers can also 'feel' it. As you travel,
changes in your speed and the gradual undulations of the road affect the
severity of the vibration.
The droning noise may or may not related as it occurs only above 90km/h and
could be the exhaust design or.....
Just a thought......I wonder if the engine or gearbox mounts are faulty?! Is
the gearbox/tailshaft/diff alignment out? Hmmmmm?!? Is this possible? I
Dunno!
Ahhhrgghhh....It's so frustrating!!
Thanks again,
tRev.

Good guess.

Tailshaft vibrations have plagued Falcons for years. Take your car along to
a mechanical repair shop and ask to have the tailshaft balanced, and you
problem will most likely be gone.

I had the entire tail shaft replaced (under warranty) at 30,000kms and it
made no difference. Are you suggesting the balancing on even a new original
shaft set is out? I'll definately follow up this lead and get it checked
anyway. Can you suggest a reputable shop in the Melbourne area?
Thanks Noddy!

Absolutely :)

Brand new Falcon tailshafts are shocking.

There is an excellent balancing shop in what used to be the old Repco engine
rebuilding shop in Barkly Street Footscray, but for the life of me I can't
remember what it's current name is.

However, I do recall that it's located at 457 Barkly Street if that Helps
you.

Duggans Balancing also used to be very good if they're still in business,
and they're in the Reservoir area.

Thanks heaps for the info Noddy.  I'll follow it up after this long weekend
and I'll post the results soon. Hopefully I'll have good news :-)
