Waity - 19 Jun 2004 01:03 GMT Allright guys, let's cut the crap. I relly need to know a bit about this auto to manual swap, but without people guessing. I have read other posts on here with people saying "I think you need to do this.", "I think you need to do that.".
I don't want people who are guessing. I don't wanna sound like a pric, allthough I probably do, I just really wanna hear it from someone who has done this.
Basically, I have an EF Auto and an EA Manual and I want the manual in the EF. I want to know the following:
1. Will the box fit? 2. What bits do I need to swap? 3. What bits do I need to buy? 4. Does anyone want my broken old auto?
Any help would be muchly appreciated.
Cheers, Waity.
Raven - 19 Jun 2004 09:39 GMT Bit of a hassle ya gotta get a dual brake and clutch reserve, oil lines remove ya old brake pedal and fit a smaller pedal to allow for new clutch pedal, and clutch assembley then in some cases ya also gotta change the rear crown cos the ratio's may be different. I did a EA few years back, took a day if ya have all the parts in ya reach. Then i dont know what your state laws are. Up here in Queensland, we have a different licence, and the transport dept states if it has 2 pedals, its auto, if its got 3 its manual. Also check out insurance too mate...
Hope this has helped

Hi Pete, I am also up here in queensland and have a manual license, so that should be sweet. Thanks for mentionin the insuarance idea though, I hadn't even thought of it, should be sweet though.
Also, my mate with the ea has bailed, so I am just gonna look for any 5 speed wreck and buy it for the bits.
Cheers, Waity.
Raven - 19 Jun 2004 23:48 GMT Gidday; I remember my EA had no probs over the pits, just long as every thing worked by the dept books. The insurance was just as easy, I had to submit a clause explaining the date, and such when the conversion was done, then the paper was was changed to suit the 5 speed manual. The box itself was a bit oif a hassle seating it properly and making sure all cables were free and such. Suncorp was sweet as they just wanted to get the engineering report to say who and when teh conversion was completed for their paper work, i think just to make sure it was done by a fully authorised mechanic and such.

You won't get any help out of me, that's for sure :)

Waity - 28 Jun 2004 05:11 GMT Mate, I didn't want to start a fight about this, like I said, I don't want to sound like a pric. I have just been reading other threads where people have been fighting about whether or not it can be done. If you don't wanna help me then that is fine by me. As for paying for someone who knows what they are doing, I simply can't afford to. I have found someone who has done it before and is going to help me do it, even without the "help" from you.
Thanks, Waity.

Yeah, but you did.
Here's a tip: If you're going to ask other people for help, ask nicely. It doesn't cost you anything.
Hope it goes well.

Gill Elmgren - 02 Jul 2004 02:28 GMT Is your cranksaft drilled for a pilot bearing, this would be a good start. Also make sure you have the right flywheel for the early fords. Seems I remember something about the 221 - 260 cid being differant from the 289 cid

Also the same deal with a Golf/Passat 1500cc swap. Then it dawned on me. The hole is also used on autos (without the bearing in it) as a torque conv support-boss receiver.

Waity - 15 Jul 2004 09:51 GMT Just so ppl know, I decided to get a mechanic to quote on the cost of the job, he hasn't given me a price yet but he says it is definately doable and worth doing. I'll keep you posted as to the cost!
Waity.
The Raven - 16 Jul 2004 04:43 GMT Waity; With a few tools, patience am sure ya could do it yourself, pretty simple really. Get all the stuff ya need, brake/clutch bottle, pipes for such, clutch pedal assembly, diff ratio crown for rear end and a 6 pack lol 2 days you would have it back on the road. If the motor is ok bolt the new gearbox on, clutch plate and pressure plate to suit and such and away ya go.
