EA falcon bushes

Hi,

just got my 1990 EA falcon serviced and asked the mechanic to give me
a heads up for what will be required for rego.... new wiper blades,
engine wash, front wheel bearing covers, front sway bar bushes, rear
control arm bushes. He says to replace the bushes on the control arm
he needs to replace the entire control arm with a reconditioned one.

Do I really need to replace the entire control arm to fix the bushes?
Would a specialist supension shop be the best place to do this?

He quoted me $1100 to do the above and a service (plugs, oil, oil
filter, air filter, fuel filter ). Sounds expensive to me.... I just
had the service done for now

You can replace the bushes in the existing arm but it is standard for them
to just exchange yours for an arm with fresh bushes - a reco unit. I think
it is a little cheaper that way so don't worry about it.

Do the sway bar bushes yourself. 30 minutes work and about $15 in parts.
Same with the wiper blades. Take it to car lovers and wash the motor down.
If you're game swap the control arms yourself - I'm guessing $120 odd
exchange for the arms. Save yourself $1000.

Thanks for the response. The only reason I am a little sus with his
assesment is  last year when I went to get my car rego'd, he told me i
needed new front and rear sway bar bushes and new front shocks. He
ended up putting in new sway bays and bushes front and rear (for some
reason). I paid cash as usual ( which means he has no records of the
work he did)

anyway, apparantly this year i need new front and rear sway bar
d-rubbers as well as rear control arm d-rubbers. Are d-rubbers
different to bushes? I would have thought as I got new sway bars and
bushes front and rear last year, all would be fine with them. Please
excuse my ignorance of basic car related matters, but am I getting
ripped off?

New sway bars?? I dont like the sound of that. Sway bars dont lose
significant amounts of spring-action (when twisted or torqued) over time.  D
bushes have a slit which allows them to be fitted without removing the
sway-bay (you simply open the slit and pop them around the bar. I haven't
heard of D bushes being used on any other suspension parts.

That rear control arm can make your car change direction when driven over
small bumps in the road. That's what happened to an EA a friend had which
had worn bush/s in that area.

I'd be looking at a new mechy.

Thanks for the advice! I took my car to an honest mechanic recommended
by a friend, it passed the rego check with flying colors. Well, I did
give it a wash, including the engine, and replaced the wiper blades.

I shall never be going back to my previous mechanic again.
