El tranny problem,

All jokes a side,
I have a problem with my El auto trans, after about 10-15 minutes of
driving the tranny seems to lock into what I think is 3rd gear, when I stop
and try and take off again the tranny feels like its slipping and won't
change gears. If I turn the engine off and start it again then it is ok for
another 5 minutes. What could be causing this,
This tranny has no dip stick either, it is a sealed unit.

any ideas?

throw it in the tip?

Had a similar problem in my ED, except it only lasted a minute or two
before making a large "thud" and getting stuck in third.

AFAIK it means the ECU has detected a problem, and put the transmission
in limp-home mode. I guess there's a hundred reasons why this could be
happening on your car, but on my car it was a faulty transmission
solenoid (which I believe is pretty common).

You could just put up with it; I've been in a few Sydney cabs whose
drivers didn't seem to notice or care that their Falcon tranny was in
limp mode.

Limp home mode - could be a few different things but most common are faulty
S1 or S2 solenoids in the transmission or a faulty Throttle Position Sensor
(TPS). It is fairly easy to get the diagnostic codes from the EECV and they
are reasonably comprehensive for the auto. Have a hunt around fordmods.com
for the listing and method or just drop into an auto tranny joint and ask
them to check the codes.

I had the same problem with my '90 ea turned out it was the trans temp
sensor wire was broken some where and so had to replace entire wire harnes
as the computer was tripping it into limp mode because it thought it was
over heating, or something like that. so get the codes out of the cpu to get
an idea. hope this helps, and LOL

It is probably a soloniod problem. I have been led to believe by mechanics
that it's often caused by owners leaving the car permanently in Economy
mode. Get a trusted Transmission Specialist/Mechanic to check it out. Good
