overheating

have a ford ea sedan...when towing my boat occasionally it heats up to near
boiling point and heater runs cold....problem suddenly stops car cools down
and heater runs hot again..only happens every now and then , and regardless
of outside temperature... any ideas...

Check you have the correct dual acting thermostat fitted (the
one that has a plate on the bottom to close of the bypass system
when the thermostat opens). Fitting a single acting T stat can
cause the problem you are having especially when altitude
changes are involved.

is it runnig on LPG or petrol ? anything leaking from the radiatior
