I have a 2001 AUII Forte wagon that has developed a rumble noise at the
front. This only occurs when the car has travelled approx 70-80K's.
When it is cold the noise is not there. It is not an engine noise as
once warm you can turn the engine off and coast and the noise is there.
I have had the wheel bearings checked and whilst one was replaced it
does not appear to be a wheel bearing. I can duplicate the noise by
applying the brakes in a jerking manner when slowly moving. My guess is
it is play in the steering knuckle and ball joint or upper arms that
once the rubber heats up the play is worse. I am almost sure it is not
related to the brake pads rattling in their calipers as I still get the
noise when I drive with the brakes on. Any ideas

G'day Tim,
Check the ball joints, front control arms and also check the engine mouts
mate, my bet is it would be one of them.
What your suggesting is not uncommon from my experience with AU's.

While the wheel bearings may spin OK,..it is adifferent matter when under
load. But having said that,..there should be a distinct difference in noise
bewteen the replaced bearing and the remaining old one on the other side (if
it is indeed the cause). Unfortunately you'll need to probably remove the
calipers to do a decent spin. The brakes drag too much.
