My  alloy head carbed weber is approaching the end of it's life and I
was looking at having a bit of performance work done when I get her
rebuilt but I was told by a few blokes that it would be a waste of money
cause FORD 6s are sh.t, better to drop a v8 in the old xe. I'd always
believed Ford 6s were pretty good, never had aproblem with mine and she
had a hard life. So what I would like to know is it worth spending money
on it. Has any one had bad experiences with them and what happpened how
much did you lose?

I believe there's a severely modded 4.1 on gas with a coupla turbos
producing around 350kw at the rear wheels.
but, you'll need a home loan to do it.

any engine has potential, if you have the potential cash.

They're certainly not one of the finest engines on earth, and some regard
them as tractor motors, but they can be made to perform reasonably well with
a good degree of reliability without too much expense.

They respond well to the usual modifications, such as camshaft, cylinder
head work, compression and exhaust, but the simple solution if you're
looking for V8 performance is to actually fit one.

Noddy.

Power to weight is not that great with Falcon 6s but the injected alloy 4.1
punches out pretty impressive performnce stock and the Webered donk is not
far behind it.

Youre ahead modifying your existing engine if youre going to strip it anyway
for a rebuild.
'Ford Australia Forum.com'   .. have some posters modifying these motors.

Bangs for buck it probably isn't that good nowadays. The XE carby 4.1
had something like 98kw's and will require a fair bit of work/$$'s to
bring it up by a decent amount.
One option that might be worth considering is getting hold of an E
series engine, you should be able to get a decent EF one for $600 or
so + maybe a grand or so mucking about to get it going and you have
157kw's on tap in a lightweight XE, fuel economy will be way better
than a worked 4.1 or a V8 + you get to run cheaper unleaded!

that would be excellent, has anyone actually done that?

I wouldn't mind having a hobby car XF ghia in mint condition with a an EF
engine and auto/manual.

can someone do some calculations and suggest what the 0-100 & 1/4 miles
times would be??

Did look into it with my XF a few years ago - as you already note the
gearbox
would also have to come with the engine, but should fit pretty well
considering
they still used the same XF floorplan for XG/XH utes.  My "vision" was
an XF running the stock 6, or maybe xr6 engine from EF/EL, throw in a
decent manual, and drop the blackwood series instrument cluster for one
from a Longreach ute or XR ute (oil pressure guages etc)...

It has been done. Biggest problem is getting around the Smartlock,
best place to ask about this is on fordforums.com, one solution was to
use an EA computer and adapt it to the EF motor, you miss out on the
dual runner intake though.
