has a fuel pump been replaced in the past and been put in incorrectly, hence
not picking up from bottom of tank?

If still no joy check temp sender may be faulty and the time it takes
to put fuel in may be enough to reset temp sender ( some efi engines
cut out engine if temp value is to high reguardless of where gauge is)
if sender "flashes" high temp value this may be enough to cut engine.

Also check coil is not cracked.
