I took the ECU out of the car and stored it for about two months. Is being
removed from the power source important?

it just has to relearn some base settings, but it should still start.
Possibly the ecu is fried, try one from a known good same model car.

Also check the ECU is earthed correctly at the footwell; the
earth screw tends to become loose with the removal of the ECU
harness and you might need to replace it with a larger screw.

Thanks for the tips. I will have a look around there.
Is there any one thing that would indicate a fried ECU, or is the only way
to put in a another one see what happens?

You could put you ecu in another car ti diagnose it.

I have found a spare ECU that a mate has in his shed. He used to be an NRMA
serviceman and has volunteered it to the cause, so I will let you know how
it goes this weekend.
Thank you all for your advice...
