ive been toying with the idea of getting a escort for my next car, they can
be had for sfa with work done to them already in most cases, i would go the
6cyl cortinas but id prefer something that can handle :) all thoughts are
appreciated...what are the jap equivalents of the era like? probably only
looking at spending $1k and want something that'll go alright...i dont want
another bloody 6cyl falcon :)

Nahh motor ate something it should not of.... and had a close look at the
rust in the wheel arch and it has gotten into the sub frame... (pushed a
screw driver through it like it was nothing). So unfortunately not worth
doing anything.

the 2 litre is ok . the 1600 is a better ride and heaps of fun , the
additional weight on the larger motor to me always them seem nose heavy/

Actually its not , in particular daily driving .. Ive driven both one
supercharged 1600 cc and one windsor .. the 351 was awesome but sucked
in the cornering and had serious traction problems , the 1600 was much
more fun to drive and was easier on the undies...

I've crashed more than my fair share :) I'm quite fond of them, even know
where there is a nice 16V but the owner won't sell :(

Jap equivalent of that era would be a Datsun 1600, independant rear
end, lots of mods or heart transplants available to make it go bloody
fast. If you want a nice looking Escort, hunt down an RS2000, rare and
sometimes flogged, but something different to the standard Escort.

A Mk1 Escort or Cortina are great cars if you can get them. I thought they'd
be quite rare nowadays, especially if in original condition. There is a Ford
wrecker closing down up here (Syd Nth Beaches), so you may be able to get
some good parts.

Great cars. Able to reach outrageous angles sideways, and still be in
control. Datsun 1600s or 180B's would be comparable - the 180B
(especially in SSS form) would be nicer to live with, I suppose, and
the Datsuns may be more reliable. Finding a straight one is
difficult, though. Cortinas can be made to handle well, and with a
Celica five speed and a mildly warmed up crossflow 6, they're a great
fun car. Not as chuckable as the other options, though. Another fun
car of the era (but also hard to find cheap) is mid-70's Celica. Very
light arse-end. :)
Cheers,
Steve

Well I had great fun with a RA40 celica. around 78,although the previous
"mustang" look is a great car
Had air/5 speed/coupe body (not the fast back)
Easy and cheap fix, from the wreckers.
No longer my main car,but i still own it.....Cheapest most reliable motoring
I ever had...I now got an EB....good but I dont really have the same faith
in it the old Celica offerred, as it has let me down a couple times
