EF Series II - Is this a geabox problem?

My EF AUTO has 270,000 kms on it.

Lately when I brake approaching lights or a corner, the revs dive very
low and sometimes (underheavy braking) it will stall.  It starts again
without a problem.  When I'm at cruise speed, sometimes I will knock
it in to Neutral and it will stall while I'm rolling.

I think it might be the Gearbox staying engaged and acting a bit like
a manual gearbox (staying in top gear even at low speed).

Anyone ever seen this?   Maybe its an Engine Management problem or
perhap even Fuel (though I had a mechanic look at it last week and he
put new spark plugs and injector cleaner though it, which didn't fix
the problem).

I would appreciate any help on this.

Thanks in Advance

It's supposed to stay in top gear for as long as it can, to provide good
economy. It will only change down with the engine load demands, and will
coast in top all the time.

I've seen it a few times, with this model Falcon and some others.

Most of the time it's fuel pressure, particularly if the tank isn't full
under hard braking. The pickup can become uncovered for a brief period
that's long enough for the line to the injectors to run dry, and the engine
stalls. Occasionally, the pump's pressure can be a bit on the low side, and
it'll have a hissy every now and then, particularly if the filter isn't
clean, or the ECU can be a tad slow updating the engine's rpm drop when you
stop suddenly.

Suffice to say, it's something you'd have to look deeply for to find the
*exact* fault, and unless it's happening every time you stop the car I
wouldn't be overly concerned.

The short answer is that it's highly unlikely to be an auto fault.

Regards,
Noddy.

It is/was probably your idle speed motor with sits on top of the throttle
body. You will probably find that when the vehicle is under load (eg air con
on, turning the steering wheel, changing into gear, etc) the vehicle's revs
will become eratic and/or drop.

Have the idle speed motor (can also be called: throttle by-pass valve, idle
speed sensor) checked out before you fork out big dollars to have the
gearbox checked and pulled apart.

The official part name is Idle Control Solinoid - affectionatly known as
ICS.

Try pulling it off (2 10mm bolts) and getting some carby cleaner into
it. You'll probably pick one up from your local wrecker for about $30-60.

There is a step by step tutorial at fordmods.com

Cheers
