Grating sound on start up

When starting the car a grating sound is sometimes heard from under the
bonnet any ideas ?.

You need to give more info. How old is the car? Does the engine turn when
the sound happens? It could be just a vibration, but alternately a broken
tooth on the flywheel, which requires pulling the transmission (a day's work
in a dealer or specialized transmission shop). Only a mechanic can tell for
sure.

The car starts ok but just before i let the ignition go the grating kicks
in. It sounds like somethings just missing or catching , forgive my complete
lack of savvy on this, thanks.
