Have you never heard of "rip-off Britain". The price of ANYTHING over here
is about twice the US price. As a generalism, take the UK £price and pay
that amount in US$

Prices *are* higher in Europe, and in the UK in particular. Bear in mind
however that generally UK cars come with a very full standard
specification.
Have a look on the Ford websites at what you get with a mid-spec Focus in
the UK, compared to a mid-spec US one. If you add on all the missing
goodies, the difference is a lot less.
Also consider that AFAIK the Focus is the smallest US Ford. In the UK there
are two models smaller than it; this obviously affects the public
perception of the Focus. It's an entry-level car Stateside, but a mid-range
car in Europe.

Hopefully a new president will sort out the state of fuel-consumption in the
US. It's attrocious. Not suggesting we get some crappy new-style ford
fiestas over there, but super-minis wouldn't go a miss.
