Battery charge question

The engine seems to be turning over slower lately.  The battery
measures 12.88v at rest.  I put a 6A charger on it and it reads 16V
when charging.  Is the battery ok?  I don't want to get stuck out in
no mans land when the battery fails.  It is 3 years old and is a 72
month battery.  Being in Florida, it doesn't see much temperature
extremes.  Should I just get a new one?

Must be quite a serious charger if it pulls it up to 16V. Either that or the
battery is close to open circuit, in which case it wouldn't start the car.
I'd give it a good test: First make sure it's fully charged, leave it
overnight to check that it's not leaking power (assuming nothing in the car
is leaking it), then give it a good test - all lights, heaters, blowers etc
on for a good 5 minutes, then see if it starts (several times). If the
battery is good, it should

a load test may be in order. but you can make sure the terminals
are clean and the alernator is charging proper voltage.

Just take it to one of the many auto parts places around the country, most
will test your battery for free.  I know AutoZone does.

You really do need to take it for a free test. The "rest" volatage is
not a good test. It needs to be tested under a load.
