My names is John and I hang out over in truck...and pop-up campers and a few
others....

but the neighbor kid (god bless his soul) is trying to change the alternator
on his mother's  '01 focus..a/c and power steering.

He had a book but I cant see any way the alternator will come out through
the top like the book says.

He's stumped and asked me for help - I put him off by saying we were running
out of daylight and we would fix it in the morning...yeah, right.

Well, I am going to start my google search and I hope one or two of you
fellows might have some good tips or links...I see no way to do it.  If it
were me I would have taken it to the shop.

thanks...

You might want to look around for some other tips for "the kid". :-)

US versions are quite different to those here in the UK, but if it's any
help, for the UK 2.0 litre version you have to unbolt the coolant tank
and move to one side. Lift the power steering reservoir from its bracket
and move to one side. Undo the securing bolt from the wiring loom,
disconnect the multi-plug, and move the loom out of the way. Undo the
bolt from the power steering reservoir bracket to release the earth
cable, and bend the bracket downwards. Undo the bolts from the canister
purge valve, and move to one side.

One of the alternator securing bolts is too long to remove in situ, so
having undone it, you have to remove the alternator with the bolt still
in position. This means that when you replace the alternator, you must
put the bolt in position before trying to refit the alternator.

The procedure on US cars may be completely different, but I have posted
this to give you an idea of what you may have let yourself in for!

FWIW, alternator removal on UK 1.4 and 1.6 litre versions is quite
straightforward.

I had mine done at a shop on a 2001 zx3 with a 2.0L.

I watched through a window.  The Mechanic had to undo the motor mounts, drop
the car on a support to lift the engine (I couldn't see how much).  He did
this several times.  He told me their was some corrosion problems to deal
with and the job took twice a long as the manual called for.

It cost me but I am glad I didn't attempt it.  It looked like a severe pain
in rear.
