Hello, I'm considering buying a second hand focus (2000), 1.6 litre 16V.
It's that or a 1.6 or 1.9TDI golf, is the old ford reputation of
(F)OUND (O)N a (R)USSIAN (D)UMP still true or will I genuinely like this
car? and be proud saying I drive a Ford Focus?, i've heard about the
handling, reliability would be my only issue.
Comments really appreciated.

I'm happy with my Focus.  No complaints on my side, in the states that quote
is "Found on Road Dead" or "f.cked Over Rebuilt Dodge"  Anyways, I'm very
happy with the Focus.  I haven't had any trouble with my 2003 ZX-5.

Had so many problems with our 2001 Ford Focus that we now call it the Ford
Fuckit! Because when something else goes wrong we say fuckit.

Worst north American car made, disposable car. Lemon aid pans it and I would
recommend a Yugo before a Focus. Why would one not buy a Corolla or a Civic
considering that the price is about the same. And in 3 years the Focus is
worth less that half whereas the 2 other cars have retained 80% of their
value. Never again will I purchase a Ford. Honda here we come.

Like I said, I have a 2003.  My rule of thumb is to not buy a car the first
two years it's introduced (at least in the U.S.A. it was released as a
2000).  I wait till the bugs are ironed out and so far so good.  I'll tell
you if I have any complaints about it though :-)

I bought a 2000 wagon in Dec. 99 and made many trips to the Ford dealer for
recalls and little fix-its...I knew I should
have waited at least a year or two but I
fell in love with it. So I still liked it enough
to buy a 2003 ZX5 last year...even after  all those trips to the dealer.

I won a Ford Focus 2000 SE and it sucks.  It has 33345 miles on it and I have had to have the fuel delivery module replaced and I still have problems getting the car started in the winter.  the battery, alternator, starter and belt all have been reported as good.

If you are set on buying a Focus, I would urge you to buy a later model. In
the states, the 2000 had and has lots of problems but the later models seem
to have fixed most of them. It looks like you are in Ireland so maybe the
European 2000s fared better. Anyhow, my Focus (2000) is a nice little car
for the money and fun to drive but it has had like seven recalls and lots of
problems.
