Had my left side link replaced on my 2000 ZX3. I was loose and had the
clunking sound over bumps that you described. You would notice it on rougher
roads. It was cheap to replace, about $65CDN. I'd have it done.

This is a common problem on early Foci. I have an '01 that got very
clunky on small bumps and got new links under warranty (around 24K
miles). The new ones looked are much beefier looking. So, the early
links were not good and hopefully the new ones will last a lot longer.
Made a HUGE difference and felt like a new car after they were
replaced.

as I replaced both of mine and still have the clunk.

That's because you changed the links when all your symptoms clearly
pointed to a CV joint failure.

Paul.
I am not too sure about the CV option as the noise is very intermittent and
sometimes occurs when driving in a straight line as well. It manifests
itself as a single "clonk" and even sometimes happens when I lift the clutch
pedal well above the bight point. I had a CV joint fail on a previous car
and it was quite dramatic compared to this.
Regards.   Len.

Just after changing the links the noise seemed to disappear but has since
returned
