Anybody have any problems with rotors wearing down early.  My wife
took her focus in for it's 30k mile oil change and the mechanic told her
she need new brakes & rotors, $400.  Brakes I can kind of understand,
although we have not heard the warning tab squeaking yet so I'm not sure
they need to be replaced.  I can't understand why rotors would go bad at
30k miles.  Anybody else experience this problem?  Sounds like really
cheap parts to me.  It's ashame because we really like the car.  It's a
nice package for a reasonable price but if we're going to have to pay
$400 every 30k miles for maintenance then we're selling it tomorrow.

Thanks for any feedback,

Although I just got my 04' Focus a few weeks, I have been following
Focus Forums for about a year and I've seen a LOT of people complain
about very premature break wear, both the pads and the rotors.  I
think the issue is that the brakes are too small for the car. Check
out this link about the upcoming 05' Focus and it specifically
mentions it will  have larger brakes.

This seems to be universal. Mine needed replacement at 70000km (45000miles).
I bought NAPA rotors and pads and put them on myself. From what I've heard
the replacements should last longer than originals.

I'm no expert on brakes, but I have heard comments on the alt.ford website
(which is far busier than this one) that Ford isn't alone in this, and it's
due to a combination of a desire to eliminate asbestos and reduce brake
noise, and the compromise has shortened brake life. Apparently this is
common in the auto industry. So if you're going to trade in your Focus just
for this issue you might want to do some research first.

I assume with all the asbestos litigation in the Western world no
manufacturer would dare fit anything that could produce asbestos dust.
There may even be a legal environmental or safety requirement to
eliminate asbestos in brake parts.

I had this problem with around 25k miles on a Citroen in the UK -
although the replacement disks (rotors) lasted 70k miles until the car
was scrapped.

My 2000 went through the front brake pads quickly (35K miles or so) but the
rotors looked OK. I normally get rotors turned when I do a brake job but
those babies are so light that I figured they couldn't be machined. The rear
shoes were in much better shape at that time but I changed them anyhow.
Actually the $400 doesn't sound all that bad. I paid $100 for parts.

Is $300 for an hour of labour normal in the US?

The pads must be very hard and metallic-based. My '01 ZX3 rotors are
wearing too but I have higher mileage. I am very easy on brakes and on
the highway 70% of the time. My brakes sound a bit like they have
sandpaper for pads but have most of their pad left at 45K miles. The
rotors also rust very easily after a night in the rain and are very
noisy for the first few brakings. One rotor is grooved a bit. I will
measure them before I put on new pads (aftermarkets, not Ford ones).
It looks like the pads may go for 100K though, so I will most likely
replace the rotors at that time too. They have a slight pedal
vibration at times and none at other times...so may be starting to
warp. For sure, the brakes on these and many other cars are not as
good as they could be! Bad place to cut corners.

A couple of my kids have had brake jobs done at major shops (Midas and
forget the name of the other one) in the last couple of years and I think
they both paid between $300 and $400. One did a great job and the other
introduced a squeal that won't go away. I will admit that it's pretty easy
money. They clean it all up, turn the rotors and drums, replace the pads and
shoes and pressure bleed the system (and, of course, guarantee the work). If
you have ever done a brake job and busted your knuckles a couple of times as
well as cover yourself with that soot, you might too think it is worth the
400 bucks!

On the other hand, if you know what you are doing, you can do a *better*
job than those chains (because it's your own car and you'll take a little
time to make sure it's done perfectly) and save $300 or more of that $400.
If I replace the pads and shoes before there is metal-to-metal contact,
I rarely have to turn rotors or drums.

Mine went at 30,000 miles. WV has auto inspection and I was shocked i
needed rotors and pads so early. the dealer said they came really thin.
Along with those lousy 16 inch expensive tires.

GUYS AND LADIES,

Please, Ford sucks big time on cheap parts.  Rotors are one of Ford's
scams.
Wear out quickly, screw the consumer.
So,  get your new rotors, and then get them cryo-hardened.
Check several places on the net.  Also, try  THE BRAKE MAN.
They do rotors and  rear wheel bearings.  about 30 to 40 a piece.
THEY WILL LAST FIVE TIMES LONGER!!!!
Also, use a good grease.  FORD SUCKS ONOIL AND GREASE.
Use AMSOIL  OR MOBIL 1.
Both in engine and tranny and  wheel bearings.  and your power steering.

Any other questions?

John.
