I just bought a 2001 Focus with only ONE KEY.

Are there any new advances from the old take it to the dealer pay
80-100 bucks for a second key??

Is it cheaper to just get a remote starter?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.....

AFAIK you cannot make another key unless you already have 2 keys,
so you need to goto the dealer at least once for the next key you make.

There is another option- secure the existing key (or just the PATS
chip portion of it) near the iginition lock, and get a couple of
unprogrammed/non-PATS duplicate keys made.

Not as secure, but certainly cheaper.

You can take the car to the dealer and he can make 1 new key and he has to
reprogram the PATS system for those new keys. Then you can buy  1 more keys
program it your self and keep it safe. Then in the future if you loose a key
or one goes dud on you will be able to program another key yourself.
