Don't know if anyone remembers my post from August. Basically the
surging at idle thing; surging when accelerating; unable to accelerate
smoothly.
Several people suggested cleaning the IAC/IAB/Idle Air Bypass Valve.
Well, I finally took it off and cleaned it with some carb cleaner, and
guess what - problem is completely gone. No more surging under any
condition, with or without AC on.
Thanks to all who responded on this!

Woohoo. Glad your car is running better =).

How thoroughly did you clean it?
I ask because I am running into some idle issues now. I have had my 88gt
for about 3 years now... I've cleaned the IAC valve a few times. This time
I scrubbed it out squeaky clean!! I used carb cleaner and got in there with
q-tips and got every bit of gunk out of it and I am still having idle
issues.
And darn, no codes on the computer...
Does anyone know if these things can go bad all together?

Great to hear. As JD would say, make this a regular maintenance thing.
That and the MAF sensor. An ounce of prevention and all that. :-)

Rightous. A yearly tune-up should always include the dreaded MAF/IAC/ACT/EGR
cleaning. I can't EVEN imagine how much money Ford's mechanics rake in just
doing simple IAC cleanings. (then charging the customer $273.28 for a new IAC
on top of it...ahem.)

I always recommend 4 things with the surging/hunting idle,
A) Clean the throttle body w/sensor/TB safe cleaner
B) Remove IAC and clean it along with the ports on the TB
C) Remove the EGR valve and clean it along with the ports on the TB/EGR spacer.
D) Pull apart both main engine harness connectors at back of intake and spray
with electrical contact cleaner, alow to dry and snap back together.
E) If MAF equiped spray the sensor with the same electrical contact cleaner.

(Damn... where'd I leave that Haynes? I've got a pair of '93s that could
probably use some attention in this area.)

Your refrigerant charge may be low, causing the AC to short cycle on-off
on-off.
