hi, i am new here and i have a problem that is pissing me off. I was driving my car 3 days before i went to college and my tranny blew.Arg!. anyway, i got a new one about a week ago, well it isn't new but it has less than 25,000 miles on it. We swapped the tranny out today and put the newer one in, it took us about 4 hours. We did a nice job of it. here is my problem. We filled it up with fluid, but we lost alot when we were putting it in, but my friend we did it with said he filled it alot so we were just losing the excess. but we finished and i took her for a spin. putting it into first the first time was just fine, but i started going and i shifted into second and it made a quick grinding noise before it went into second. what is that? it doesn't do it shifting into 3rd, 4th, or 5th. it is hard to put it back into first too, i really have to push hard. it also doesn't downshift into 2nd from 3rd all the time, i have to play with it for a couple seconds before it does it. and downshifting into 1st from 2nd it also grinds. so there is some of the grinding noise trying to shift into 1st and 2nd, and it is hard to put it into 1st, and it is hard to shownshift from 3rd to 2nd...does anybody know what my problem is? i really need to know what my problem is? if anyone knows what it is please tell me...i think it needs more fluid since we lost alot putting it in. please help me!

What kind of car are we talking about? What transmission? What year? etc.
More information please.

1988 Mustang 5.0 LX, T-5 transmission, and i just checked it again today and i can't even put it into first at all, even if the car is off. and it makes a whirring noise when my foot is off the clutch and when i push it down it stops. the sound comes from where the stick is.

Sounds like it could the the throw-out (aka release) bearing. I'm no expert
on transmissions though.. but throw-out bearings are known for wearing out.
Just my .02 cents. I'm sure others will give you more feedback.
