hi, i am new here and i have a problem that is pissing me off. I was driving my car 3 days before i went to college and my tranny blew.Arg!. anyway, i got a new one about a week ago, well it isn't new but it has less than 25,000 miles on it. We swapped the tranny out today and put the newer one in, it took us about 4 hours. We did a nice job of it. here is my problem. We filled it up with fluid, but we lost alot when we were putting it in, but my friend we did it with said he filled it alot so we were just losing the excess. but we finished and i took her for a spin. putting it into first the first time was just fine, but i started going and i shifted into second and it made a quick grinding noise before it went into second. what is that? it doesn't do it shifting into 3rd, 4th, or 5th. it is hard to put it back into first too, i really have to push hard. it also doesn't downshift into 2nd from 3rd all the time, i have to play with it for a couple seconds before it does it. and downshifting into 1st from 2nd it also grinds. so there is some of the grinding noise trying to shift into 1st and 2nd, and it is hard to put it into 1st, and it is hard to shownshift from 3rd to 2nd...does anybody know what my problem is? i really need to know what my problem is? if anyone knows what it is please tell me...i think it needs more fluid since we lost alot putting it in. please help me!

It sounds like you have a clutch cable adjustment issue.

We are talking about a 5 speed manual transmission, right?
Make sure it's filled correctly. If it's a T5, there is a fill plug on the
passenger side of the trans on the main body about halfway up. It has a 3/8
inch square in the middle that a ratchet fits into. Remove this plug and fill
it with ATF until level is even with the bottom of the threaded hole. Install
the plug.
Make sure the self adjuster on the clutch cable is set right. Been a long time
since I've messed with a T5. There are others here that an provide more info.
Basically if you played with the cable or linkage, you should reset the
adjuster.

yeah this is a T-5, do you know what i have to do to adjust my clutch cable for my situation? i am going to see if i can fix it tomorrow so info ASAP would be awesome. thanks.

If you have the stock clutch cable and pulley assembly, you only need to
lift up on the clutch pedal and then press it to the floor. If the clutch
needs adjusted, that'll do it.
However....
More likely, you'll need more adjustment than that will give you. A new
cable or even a quadrant and cable kit from an aftermarket supplier will
probably help you out a lot.
If the clutch catches *at* the floor, then you probably need some clutch
assistance. If it catches high and you're still grinding gears (shifting
like a normal human being), then it's more likely internal to the
transmission.... either that or a pilot bearing problem with the input shaft
catching on the bearing.
A common test for clutch disengagement issues is.... with the car at idle
and the clutch engaged in neutral, press in the clutch, count to 5, and then
try to put it in reverse. If it grinds a lot, your clutch is not
disengaging properly. If it's only a tooth or two, it might still be
spinning down.
Another test is jacking up the rear end, putting the car in first, stepping
on and holding in the clutch, then starting the car. If the wheels spin,
the clutch is making contact... or the pilot bearing is.
The fluid fill is the side plug on the transmission that's highest up. A
3/8" drive ratchet fits the square-drive plug. Remove the plug and fill it
to the bottom of that hole with the car *level*. That's as full as full
gets. If it still exhibits problems, it may be internal or the clutch
problems I mentioned above.

OK this si wierd...i just went out and started my car. it was making a wierd noise where the stick is. like a whirring noise, i pushed the clutch down and it stopped, i lifted the clutch back up and it started making the noise again, and so on. i adjusted the clutch by pushing on it for a couple seconds then lifting it as high as it can go. the noise was still going when my foot was off the clutch. and i can not put the car into first at all. this is really getting wierd and really pissing me off does anyone know what that could be..i haven't checked the fluid yet but i will do that in a little while..if anyone knows please help me!

First... do you know if the transmission was good before putting it in or
did you just put it in hoping that it was good?
Transmission fill tip - Get yourself a long piece of clear hose (Home Depot
carries this) and attach it to a funnel. With two people, have the guy at
the bottom ensure that the hose is in the transmission (and that a drip pan
is handy) and have the guy at the top pour fluid into the funnel. When it
starts to drip, tell the guy to stop, and then allow it to stop dripping
before putting the plug back in. That will be full.
As for the whirring noise, sounds like a lack of fluid maybe, or something
damaged inside the transmission. Hopefully you didn't run it so dry that
you took out the main shaft - it'll be cheaper to buy another transmission
than replace that shaft.

I had your exact problem of the clutch making noise when I let off the
clutch, but going away when I was on the clutch... it was the throw-out
bearing... had it replaced & the noise went away.. but I made 'em drop the
tranny again & replace the whole clutch assembly.. so I wouldn't have to
(hopefully) replace the clutch assembly for a long time.

Why not take it to a tranny shop and have them take a look at it. Most do
free diags. at least around here they do.
