WTB: Mustang differential....

A cursory search of the junkyards in Austin has come up empty.

I am working on a 5-lug conversion for my '90 Mustang. I am looking for a
rear end to do the conversion on the ground, then bolt up. Paydirt would be
a setup with 3.55 gears, 5-lug done, limited slip/Traction-Lok and disc
brakes, with preference given to the unit closest to that.

Must bolt up to a 1990 Fox platform....i.e. '88 to '95. Must also be
relatively local: Austin-San Antonio. I'll be in Houston March 11, so that
would be a possibility, especially if the price is right.

I have cash. What have you got, and what are you asking?

So, you're looking for a Ford 8.8" rear end, with 3:55 gears?

You can almost get those at 7-11...

This place has one for $250.00... http://recycler.car-part.com/BillDee/

Just have to go to Houston to get it...

Problem with this is Mustangs didn't come stock with 3:55 gears unless
they were changed over by the owner at some point in time. The
Thunderbird Turbo Coupe from 87-88 with manual transmission did however
(autos have 3:73) and these can be used in the Mustang with a few
changes.

I used to have an 88 Thunderbird with a C4 auto, and it had a 2:73 rear end
stock...

I had to go out and get 3:55 for it...

I got it from a place on South Congress... Aarons Auto Salvage I think the
name of the place was, and I only paid about $175 for it.

They even threw in the matching driveshaft, as well as a new spline for it
from another Thunderbird... It was (somewhat) plug and play...

Strange, in an age when nearly all salvage yards are interconnected
via internet, that they couldn't track one down for you. I can even go
on line and contact them, and leave a message as to what I seek.

Do they actually respond? The few times I have done this there was no
response.

I've done the five lug swap on my '89 LX.  It wouldn't take any more
time to install two left side axles and five lug brake drums from a
ranger using your current axle housing.  This saves you from pulling the
entire axle assembly.  I think I got the swap kit (axles and drums) from
Ford Racing for around $200.  You can probably get them for half that,
or less, from a salvage yard.  You can buy used 3.55 gears and a
differential from The Corral or most any Mustang site for cheap.

I did a swap from a turbo coupe years ago (3.73).  The swap was easy
and pretty straight forward.  If I remember right, you need a brake
proportioning valve from summit to adjust to the increased fluid level
that the rear discs require.. Also a parking brake cable change...

I haven't found many people in Austin that can reasonably and reliably
do a rear end.. The pinion depth is the trick.  Sure you can pick up
gears reasonably cheap, but if it costs $500 to install them - a gear
swap doesn't make sense...

I took it that the original poster was keeping the rear drum brakes.
This greatly simplifies the five lug conversion for the rear.  I didn't
change any brake lines, master cylinder or use proportioning valves.
The brakes are a tad spongy but they work much better than the stack
ones even with a softer pedal.

Paying $500 just for the installation of gears is too much IMO.  Around
here (Northern Virginia) you can get gears installed for around $450 and
this includes new ring and pinion gears.  Unless a person has the tools
and talent to do their own work, anyone modding a car should be prepared
to spend some money for parts AND labor.
