I was on the Crown Vic website, and there was some discussion about cracking and subsequent coolant loss from the plastic crossover pipe. The permanent fix is replacement wit a manifold that has an aluminum crossover. Some questions: 1. How frequent is this problem? Consumer reports indicates a very low percentage of failures in the engine/fuel/coolng system categories. 2. If it is frequent, is it a high mileage/hard usage kind of thing? The guys on the Crown Vic site seem to be performance oriented, and likely push their cars harder than the average driver. 3. If a crack does occur, can a temporary repair be made with epoxy/KB Weld, etc? By temporary, I mean lasting long enough to get back home from a trip, say 300 to 500 miles. 4. Does anyone know the cost of replacement and intallation of a manifold with the aluminum crossover? Thank you guys for the feedback on my first post, and thanks in advance for this one. You can take it to the Ford dealer to have it fixed and the new, improved, reinforced with metal intake costs about $500, plus the cost of installation. The aftermarket has jumped in and has the same design (with the reinforced crossover) costing about $200, plus the cost of installation. Of course, the Ford dealer will not install the aftermarket intake manifold, but any good shop can. I've never seen one that could be temporarily fixed with JB Weld. The later model engines have this fix from the factory. If you need a source for this intake manifold, let me know. Otherwise, it is available at your aftermarket auto part stores, just maybe not at the national chain stores. It actually is fairly frequent. Mine did it around 90,000 miles I believe. I have a line on a 97 Grand Marquis, one owner, clean title, 54,000 miles at a good price, but it has the original manifold....that's why I'm pestering you guys with these specific questions. Thanks for your help and patience. Usually, it is a slow leak. If I were you, I'd stop by your friendly (when YOU are paying the bill) Ford dealer and ask if your make and model is under the recall. They will run your VIN and at the worst tell you that it is not. The catastrophic failures are the GM 3800 V6 models that have the plastic engine manifold by-pass nipples. They get old, break and in 15 seconds you have lost all your coolant...... To prove my point, the GM replacements are steel. Mine was a rather slow leak that was detected early.
