Is it me, or does 410 hp sound kind of low, coming from a
5.4 litre with a blower? It could be that they are downplaying
the performance figures, but why do that today, the insurers
already nail cars like this? My Mach-1 with it's smaller engine
and no blower is probably and arguably rated at around 330-340hp,
around 300 at the rear wheels so I find it hard to believe the
Shelby is only 410. Apart from that, the car looks
superb, but the $70-$80k U.S. price tag seems a little
high.

Rich,
Horsepower numbers are like badges, they don't mean a thing. It's all
about the performance, and that Shelby is going to perform! It will be
able suck up your Mach 1 and spit it out.
As for the price, it's listed at $39,999.

I expect that 410 hp is an extremely underrated figure. A tuner will
have that engine making 600-700 rwhp in the blink of an eye. If it is
making 410 hp then Ford has the thing breathing through a soda straw.

I agree 410hp for a blown 5.4 seems a bit low.
Look at the 2003/?04? Cobra which is a blown 4.6 making ~400 hp.
You would think beefing it up to 5.4 would put it more around 470 hp...
Is that 5.4 going to be 16 or 32 valve? Maybe it is just a 16-valve and that
would explain it... ?
On the optimistic side, maybe they are using very little boost and also
tuning it conservative so that it is a very dependable and long-lasting
engine.
And maybe the torque numbers/curve is super impressive?

If that's the price forget it. It's still carrying over quite a bit from
the basic 6 cylinder car, and the competition in that price range
doesn't force people to put up with that.
$40K is pushing the acceptable limit for this car, regardless of how good
the engine is.

Autoweek's figures are a bit different...
2007 FORD SHELBY COBRA GT500
ON SALE: June 2006
BASE PRICE: $39,000 (est.)
POWERTRAIN: 5.4-liter, 450-plus-hp, 450-plus-lb-ft supercharged V8; rwd,
six-speed manual
CURB WEIGHT: 3600 lbs (est.)
0 to 60 MPH: 4.5 seconds (est.)
Final horsepower figures are not firm, but Thai-Tang hints it will be "well
over 450 hp, closer to 500." Look for 450-plus lb-ft of torque too.

Let's hope so. I figure by the time they make the convertible I just
might be in the market.

I'm holding the May edition of Motortrend in my hands, and it does NOT say
that the Shelby GT500 will cost $80K. It says the following:
"Best guess? 40-45 grand.
It also says "I can tell you the GT 500 is going to have at least
450(horses)."

Thanks Andrew.
That means I can still keep my fingers crossed.

When I went to the NY Auto Show the Ford rep there said the Shelby would
cost around $39k. They are going to produce as many of these cars as the
demand will be. Also expect 450 plus hp more towards 500hp as others
mentioned in this thread. They wont have sequential tail lights cause the
California Special is also returning and will debut with it.
