I am considering a pre-emptive intake manifold replacement on my wife's 1997 G.M. 54,000 miles, looks and runs like new. I checked Advance Auto Parts website and found two choices, the Motormite at $265, and the Dorman at $199. The show a picture of the Dorman, and it appears to be all plastic like the original. No picture of the Motormite, but it carries a lifetime warranty. Anyone have any info on these two items? The Ford has had problems with the 4.6. The GM had a problem with the EGR gases eating through the plastic passages. The Ford had a problem with the coolant leaking from the plastic intake because it wasn't reinforced enough. I can't talk about the Motormite because I haven't used it, but the Dorman is good. Both of the GM and Ford have metal reinforced areas where they were burned from the EGR or where they were leaking coolant. If you want to see some better pictures of the aftermarket manifolds, just go to ebay and type either: 4.6 intake manifold or 3800 intake manifold. I guess my brain wasn't working yet today. Being it's his car, it's his call. The Ford part is higher, but like I mentioned, the Dorman is a good part. But once again, it's his money. I saw on another post that somebody had gotten one from Ford for $140. I've never seen a genuine Ford replacement intake that cheap, but if he did, that's the route to take. That would be me. I can dig up the receipt... I have it somewhere. It was $140. To see a picture just do a google search under "Dorman intake manifold". I guess it all depends if he wants to keep his Ford all Ford or not. |
