Is The New Mustang Too Retro?

Read an interesting article the other day.  It was in Mustang
Enthusiast magazine and the columnist questioned the retro direction
the new Mustang has taken, specifically the new Shelby GT500.  His
thoughts were that team Mustang should develop new iconic Mustangs and
not rely or replay names from the past.  I thought this thinking was
ironic since through the 90s seemed most folks were screaming for a
return to the 60's-style Mustang.  'Ford, build me a new <insert
favorite 60's Mustang here>, but with all the modern dynamics.' Is this
not what we wanted?  So Ford delivers and now, for some, the new
Mustang is too retro?!  Here are my thoughts.  I think Ford, for the
most, nailed the new Mustang styling.  My only concern is what comes
next?  Do they just do touch-ups on the present design like new tail
lights, side scoop/cutout, maybe fender flairs or ducktail spoiler?  Do
they take cues from another popular era of Mustang --  '64.5-'66,
'71-'73, 80's Fox body?  Or do they ditch retro and come up with
something new entirely?  And what about the specific complaint of doing
redos of legends of the past?  Should the next specialty Mustang *not*
be named Boss 302 or Mach 1?  Is not, what about naming it after a
racing circuit the new Mustang is in or should be involved in?

What your thoughts?

Personally I like the new look. I agree the rear tail lights should be
redone, but the rest looks fine to me. To me the 2005 looks very similar to
the 99-04 without the turned down front nose. The roof shape is basically
the same. It think it will be a long time before they mimick the Fox
Mustang, as some say that design had little cues from earlier Stangs. There
will always be someone who isn't happy with the styling. I was suprised at
how little room inside the new cars were though. It seems cramped. I guess
I've been spoiled by the early Fox Stangs which I think were the roomiest of
the later cars. I would have no idea where the new styling will go next. I
only hope I can get my own car before they radically change it again. I
suspect the next minor design facelift will come with the 2010 model. They
could do something new, but hard to say how old design cues will filter into
the new look. The only real retro look of the new car is the front end. If
they sloped it down like the 2004 I hardly doubt others would say its retro.
Now if only they can fix the rear end look. Its too space age looking.

The next 'mustang' should be a shelby -- they re did the GT500 and I can
hardly wait to see one in person! But I was hoping for a small block.

Could a small block GT-350 be far behind?

Oh please.

The short answer is, they can do whatever they want.  Where's the
competition?  There is none.  Unless Nissan or Toyota drops a truck V8
into a rear drive platform.  Regardless, there will be trim variations
from year to year, and performance upgrades too.   What comes after
that?  Why the second coming of the Mustang II of course.

Unlike your mag writer, I have nothing against the "Shelby GT500"
designation.  Shelby did some glorious things in his day (although the
GT500 was not really one of them).  So why not remind people?  Just  so
long as, 40 years from now, these '06 or '07 GT500's aren't the subject
of the ridiculous veneration given to the '67-70's today.

Nothing wrong with a Mach 1 either; the latter day precedent is already
established.  I would not care for a Boss 302 however.  Irrc the 5
liter "Cammer" is 305 ci.  But that's just me.

Yes.
But it grows on you.

The taillights are pitiful they leave the rear end with no definition

I agree, and I also think that the new GT needed a scoop or something
on the hood but the GT500 more than makes up for it. I just hope that they
don't change it before it goes to production. I want the CONCEPT Cobra! ;-)

well it must not be "too" retro, or "too" anything (except popular)...

i read that this new mustang has been the fastest selling car in north
america for the last quarter, or something like that, so most people
apparently seem to like it.

personally i like the retro accents, but it sure seems like a big sucker to
me, with a big a.s end.  but with the right sized wheels and tires, i think
it looks SWEEEEEEET!
