'93 LX 5.0 Cat-Back Suggestions

The LX has started sounding more obnoxious these days, so I decided to
take a look underneath.  Alas, nothing but swiss cheese except for the
Flows and the tips.  The Flows might last a bit more, but there are a
bunch of soft spots so I figure it's time to do a full cat-back.

So what are some of your favorites?  Prices?  Sound?  Drone?  TIA.

Joe,

I had Dynomax on my old LX.  They were just a little louder than stock,
but they did drone at about 2,200 rpm.  They were a bit quieter when I
added a catted X-pipe.

My '93 is still running the stock set-up... 103,000 and counting.

Double Dynomax here. The LX has the UltraFlows, really like the sound. For
the GT, with the turn-downs, I have the SuperTurbos - a bit louder, but
still more "dignified".

Besides - I AM an old fart, and I can't be running around with Flowmasters.

I did check out some of the more common systems, i.e., Dynomax,
Flowmaster, Borla, Bassani, etc.  Amazingly, one of the least
expensive systems I found was from Ford Racing:

http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=4903

One thing I'm looking for here is a system with mandrel bent pipes.
I know it's a case of 'you get what you pay for', but that's why I
asked you guys.  :)

BTW, The LX pipes were fine way back at 103k miles.  But now that
I'm up to 143k, things have gotten pretty nasty.  I'm sure dwight
knows what I mean...  ;)

Now, froggy, we are both old farts, but the Flows were never that
bad.  Unless, (like Michael is also saying about the UltraFlows)
you put your foot into it, the old Flowmasters I have (had?) are
fairly mellow.

I kind of like the idea of staying mellow until you punch it,
especially because my son will be driving the LX for the most part
now.  Even though the car sticks out on the road because of its
color (the only other Calypso Green cars out there are a few old
Rangers, Probes, and Tracers/Escorts), I'd much rather it didn't
draw attention due to excessive noise.

Thanks. Now I'm looking at the crate 302s again...

The Dynomax pipes are mandrel bent.

I remember what a happy day it was, when one of my pipes just broke. That
was some years ago, but it meant that I could go shopping for a new set-up.
I also remember asking just about the same questions you are, and settled on
the UltraFlows, because I wanted a quieter sound for puttering around the
neighborhood, but a somewhat meaner note at acceleration. Where the stock
pipes were definitely a tenor, the UltraFlows would be baritone.

You got me curious, so I just stepped outside to poke around under TFrog.
The pipes are still very healthy, although several inches of pipe just after
the mufflers are showing signs of age. The mufflers, themselves, still look
new.

Hah! I've offered the convertible to my daughter, for the occasional cruise
this summer, but I'd still be sweating it out if she ever took me up on it.
There's no way in this life that I'd let my son drive either Mustang - but
you'd have to know my son to understand. I don't think he'd be all that
interested, anyway.

I don't even like to see a mechanic drive my cars, if only from the parking
spot into the bay. I am one nervous owner...

Yeah, they're pretty cool.  Not too streetable, but neat
nonetheless...

Good way of describing them.  I think I'd like the deeper tone.

Did you poke at them for soft spots?  The LX's Flows looked ok, but
there were a bunch of soft spots that will probably give way after a
few more months or so.

I know what you mean, as I'm sort of the same way.  But I force myself
to just let it go and deal with it.  At our age there are more
important things to sweat over, eh?  ;)

?? The "beginner's model" 302, rated at 315HP/305ft.-lbs... why not
streetable? I'm not taking TFrog to the track every week, but a replacement
5.0 that makes 100HP more than I have now? And almost a direct drop-in... I
could learn to live with it.

If I had the equipment, I'd send you sound files of both cars. I really like
the "note".

Yeah, sure, I'll poke at 'em with a stick. No way! They're corroded, but I
don't want to force the issue by poking holes in the pipes. Okay, okay, I'll
look for "soft spots" - but if I DO make holes, I'm just going to have to
get ME a new exhaust...

Okay, I'm back. Yes, some slight corrosion, but mostly just dirty (sue me).
The metal is still very sound. If I hadn't just moved, I'd pull out the
records and tell you how old they are - I think at least 5 years.

No wonder they're in such good shape - they went on in March 2003! I'd swear
it was longer ago, but that's about right. The stock pipes lasted almost 10
years before they just fell off.

I bought the GT convertible later that year, and its first fix was the
SuperTurbos that I had installed, so it would pass PA inspection. It's all
coming back to me now...

That's why it's important for us Old Farts to keep records.

Got one of those diskless mp3 players?  Some record voice too.  So
get hold of one and record the exhaust.  Then transfer the file to
your computer and e-mail it to me.

This is somewhat off topic but have you checked out Netflix?  I signed
up recently and have been fairly impressed with their service.  I can
send three movies back Sunday afternoon and have three more by the
following Wednesday.  It takes a movie one day from ordering to showing
up in our mail box! It takes 2-4 weeks for the latest releases to show
up on the site but it is convenient.  The movies come with a return
envelope that already has return postage on it.  Very convenient.  Plus
DVD burners and blank media are cheap nowadays. ;)

We only watch a couple a month, so I don't know if I want to join a
service just for that.  Hell, we go to Wendy's more than we watch
videos.

I hear you about the DVD burners, but my PC is only a 450 P-III.
Don't know if it'll handle burning DVDs...

They have different plans.  I pay $17/month to have three movies in
rotation.  For $9/month there is a one movie rotation plan.  Sounds like
that would be a plan you might consider.  I like the convenience of it
more than anything.  Plus they have a large library of DVD's from
current stuff to old movies from the 1950's and numerous television shows.

That's not bad, but the two or three times I go to the video store a

This thing's maxed out at 384mb RAM.  I think I'll need to upgrade

Nobody locally carries music videos (i.e., Clapton's Crossroads) to
rent - only movies and games.  Of course, I can go plop down $25 or
more to buy them, but I'd rather preview them first by renting.

I have fast computers but one problem I have run into is the operating
system.  There is one old civil engineering program I use that that will
not run under Windows XP.  I've tried everything and searched everywhere
to find a work around.  It's amazing how many companies have dropped
support for Windows 98/ME.  I recently set up a Windows ME computer at
home and had a hell of a time finding drivers for some digitizers and
plotters since I lost the original driver disks.  Plus Microsoft is
supposed to stop supporting Windows 9X this summer.  I guess I'll have
to bite the bullet eventually and learn to use the new software I
havesitting around collecting dust. :(

It is such an investment of time to learn the software.  In the next six
months I will be fully transitioned into doing land development and will
likely not engineer for fee anymore.  I just need to limp along with my
old trusty software until the end of the year.  I guess 50-55 is when

I was 39 when I bought TFrog (my 4th Mustang), and people who supposedly
knew me were saying that it was my midlife crisis. That brought on a bout of
Old Fartism.

I was about 45 when the basketball hoops went up out back of my house, and
TFrog's alarm was frequently set off by wayward basketballs. That brought
about an extended bout of Old Fartism.

I was 50 when I moved outta there and settled into the gentrified outer
circle of the far suburbs, and my Old Fartism is in full swing. I have no
time for screaming kids, punk-a.s wannabes with ultraloud car stereos, and
just want to be left alone to tend to my groundskeeping.

I may have had Early Onset Old Fartism, but I'm enjoying the hell out of it
now.

Like dwight, I got my LX as my midlife crisis solution - it was right
before I turned 40.  But I didn't consider myself an Old Fart yet.

I became an Old Fart when my son started laughing at me because I was
simply being me.  But I've always remind him that my name is on the

Once he gets that engineering degree and becomes financially independent
he can laugh with without fear of reprisal. ;)

I don't see a mid-life crisis in my future because I'm too immature to
think that deeply.

I was listening to an older guy talk about going senile recently and he

I still have the Mustang I bought new in 1989.  I'm accused of being
unable to let go of my youth.  I like to think of it as I'm still
immature.  IMO, being too mature is highly over rated.  The trouble is

I keep the '93 because it fits. And it still makes me smile. If that's
immature, then fine; I make up for it in other areas.

My body may fail me over the coming years, but I swear I'm going to my grave

I've told my wife not to make me choose between her and the '89.  I've
known that car longer than I have her.  Getting rid of it would be like
selling my favorite dog.

I just had that very same conversation with my wife this week.  She's
pissed about how much money has been dumped into it over the years,
and she accused me of thinking that "the car was part of the family".
Of course, I told her she was right.  It was the first car we bought
as a family, and now it's sort of being passed down to my son.  I
think of it as an heirloom of sorts.

My left leg's just fine.  That's why automatics were invented.

Let the flames begin...  ;)

No flames from me.  I just hope the GT500 has an option for an auto
tranny.  It will do duty as a cruiser, not a road racer.  Plus, one
thing I've learned from hopping up the LX is having a manual car with
400+ rwhp and a boat load of torque makes the first two gears worthless.
In a 0-60 run I spend more time shifting than accelerating.

There ya go.  Automatics are tons o' fun with torquemonsters.  Just a
blip or two of the throttle and it's party time.  The Dak's tranny is
pretty neat - the harder you're accelerating the firmer it shifts.
WOT is a blast.

I really hope the GT500 has an auto option.  If it does it will be a
terror at the drag strip.

After spending 2 1/2 hours yesterday on the 405 (LA area) going 65 miles I'm
almost ready to get an automatic in may next car, no matter what decade that
is!

I hear ya.  My commute is usually 1 to 1-1/2 hr each way, at least 20
minutes of which is creepy crawly.  An automatic is just fine for me.

BTW, to get back on topic, I ended up getting Flows again for the LX.
2-chamber Delta something or other.  The shop I went to did a cat-back
but they saved my stock tips, which I wanted badly.  $300 out the
door.  The sound is fairly mellow during normal driving, but they
sound downright _nasty_ at WOT.

That's exactly the sound I'm looking for.  Thanks.

As I get older I like things quieter.  The Dynomax Ultraflows on the car
now are good until you put your foot in it.  Then they sound like
straight pipes.  One of the best sounding systems I had on the car was
the Motorsport stainless steel catback.  It had no drone but the
inlet/outlets on the mufflers necked down to 2.25" while the tubing was
2.5".  If you aren't looked to squeeze ever last hp out of the engine it
is a very affordable alternative that will give a somewhat unique sound.
I got many compliments on the sound of my car when it was installed.
ironrod - 08 Jun 2005 05:29 GMT
I wound up with about the same setup when I was trying to recover from the
mistake of adding Flowmasters.  My final & still current configuration is 2
1/2 inch pipes from the cats to a set of staggered length 2 1/4 Midas turbos
back to 2 1/2 pipes going to a set of 10 inch long glass packs set up in a
resonator configuration before dumping out the back.  I know I picked up a
lot of bottom end torque when I added the narrower mufflers.  Based on my
experience I would recommend going with 2 1/4 pipes going into a nice set of
turbo mufflers.  They don't have to be the Midas brand but they do carry a
mustang specific set of staggered length turbos complete with heat shields
and brackets.  Works for me.

I think this is similar to the Ford setup.  More torque certainly
wouldn't hurt, as the car's got an AOD.

Things seem that way to me already.  Could be because I'm going
deaf...  ;)

This is a good thing.  See comments in my reply to Patrick and dwight.

Now that's interesting.  Is it the same system in the link in the
reply to Patrick and dwight?  As my son will be driving the car
mostly, I'm not too concerned about squeezing every last bit of power
out of it.  In fact, I'm taking the underdrives off to give it better
driveability.  It's going through a battery a year now.

So far, it looks like the Ford and Dynomax systems are contenders.

The Dynomax Ultraflows are really loud at WOT, especially with the
blower making boost.  It's so loud that it attracts too much attention.
I like to accelerate without worrying that ever cop within a 1/4 mile
is trying to find me.

That looks like the same system.  Its a good deal considering its all
stainless steel.  With you being in Florida though I guess that isn't a
big concern. :)

I'm sure the blower doesn't help with the noise at WOT.  I don't have
that problem, as the LX is fairly mild.

No snow, but plenty of humidity.  The rust may not be as bad, but the
"rot factor" is pretty high.  The environment down here is murder on
rubber and plastic.

That's a bit over the top for what I'm looking for.  Don't want to
deal with the cats, h-pipe, or headers either.  As is dwight, I'm an
old fart.

Dwight--Old Fart doesn't start until you're atleast 60.  You guys have given
me some new ideas for for '90 LX 5.0 HB

Hah. Old Fart starts every morning when I wake up. But as long as I wake up,
I'm happy.

I'm still in maintenance mode, myself - no upgrades in the near future.
Right now, I'm hoping that I have a clogged fuel filter.

At least, that'd be the cheapest diagnosis of TFrog's current problem.
