Batten down the hatches, Florida!  Looks like [Hurricane] Dennis the

Yup.  We sure are early this year.  Hope that Cuba slows it down a
bit, but first up in the USA is Key West.  We should get a nasty
weekend out of it over on the SE side, but you might get more,
Patrick.  Stay safe!

Joe,

We're not riding it out this year.  This time we're going to batten
everything down/board it up and head to a shelter for a good night's
sleep.  We'll worry about the aftermath after it passes.

see there.  that is why I like tornado's, you get to survey the damage much
sooner.  and its less likely to destroy a whole city/state.

Tornados sneak up much quicker on you.  And if one hits you, who cares
what other damage occurred?  With hurricanes, at least you have a few
days to prepare.

It's a VW commercial, where they announce this big sale.
Some guy is standing out by a Jetta as a young couple approaches with a
salesman.
The guy in desperation licks the handle to 'claim' his car making it
undesirable for the couple approaching.

kind of like you would do with a candy that your little brother wanted.

Gol dang!. I suppose I could park some rocks or old tires on the tin instead
of just leavin it  leanin against them tree limbs like we usually do
I spose I could even put a bored up agin the piece of plywood we use for a

down!

I am pretty sure it will be ok.
If not, the damn thing is insured.

Good for you.  Although I've now heard that it might go down to a cat

Latest South Florida report: Combination of sun and clouds here, heavy
wind gusts.  No rain yet.

Hey...

We in Philly thank you.

For hurricanes coming up the coast, we have New Jersey as a buffer. For
those coming up from the Gulf, we have Tennessee, where (hopefully) those
things will blow themselves out.

You want safe? No one even knows where Philadelphia is.

Appreciated, Kate, but I'm not leaving this new place. (I had so much fun
doing my "forensic gardening" last weekend that I didn't go anywhere. And
didn't want to.)

By the time Dennis gets here at the end of next week, we'll probably need
the rain.

I know WE do. Our place has cracks so deep in the clay that I swear a
Chinaman is hollering at me from the other side of the big one by the back
porch.

Forensic gardening?

I'd like to know more about THAT!
We have had some interesting discoveries on our place. Nothing to shout
about, just weird little heaps of junk hidden amongst the leaves.

ROFLMAO!
Actually, there IS an old Sturebaker just on the other side of our property
line hidden out in the trees. Upside down and rusted to death.
Found pieces of an old stove, and the stash where the roofers hid their
trimmings and Dr Pepper bottles. I don'[t understand why people out here
don't use construction dumpsters rather than just pushing it into a pile out
of sight.

I suppose that since we came from a place where property is at a premium, we
learned to care for every inch we could.

We took possession of the place on May 20th. The back edge of the property
is bordered by a chain link fence that separates us from the reservoir. That
chain link fence is overgrown with vines and ivy. I have about 100' of brush
and overgrowth growing along that fence, anywhere from 20' to 30' deep. One
week, I found roses blooming inside that mess. Then a yellow day lily poked
up through the thicket. After staring at it for a month, I decided to start
cutting it back, 'cause I have plans for next year...

The first feature I uncovered was a carefully placed border of rocks. Five
feet deeper, I found a pair of tall "decorative grasses" - the large round
growths that look like spider plants. I cut around what roses I found, and
pulled a ton of weeds and vines out from the area. I uncovered several
lilies in there, too.

It's kind of like an archeological dig - I have to be careful not to chop
out something that should stay. But my 100' of tangled mess is little by
little looking like a planned landscape.

Funny part is, ALL of it is coming out this fall. I'm going to nuke the
space and lay down a cut-flower garden in the spring.

Sounds pretty interesting. I think it would be fun to find all those
goodies, like you said, like sorting through ruins.
You can always transplant the things you want to keep, or replant them.

We have been working on a brick and cobblestone patio in the front of the
house, it replaced a weed patch that was prone to flooding after a rain. The
previous owner didn't do much with it so it was a big mess out there.
http://www.kizthiz.com/patiobefore.jpg
The plants on the stairs were dug up from the original space, I am still
trying to find them a home.
They shocked pretty badly because of the heat.

It turned out real well..
http://www.kizthiz.com/patioafter.jpg
now all we have to do is get the accent pieces, a bistro table, small bench
and some planters. It will be a nice place to watch the sunset and really
made a difference on the entry of the house.
Next will be to get rid of the columns, put in porch rails and shutters and
paint the front door white.

*sigh*
it never ends.

I can be very detail oriented, and being from the rainy northwest the
first thing I thought about the "before" picture was "No wonder it
floods; That downspout is pointing the wrong way for that splashblock to
do any good." :)

Exactly, except a lot more simple, just a simple line of bricks

Well, for what it's worth, here's a tip!
Home Deopt price on bricks .58 each

The local cement company's price .31 each.

As far as the mow strip, that would be so easy that it would be a COMPLETE
waste of money to hire it out!

DAMN, you guys do nice work. Hey - Jean's been talking about replacing the
wood patio deck with a stone patio... I don't suppose you work in stone as
well as brick, do you? I'd like a 25-foot stepped waterfall along the left
edge, if you can swing it.

I have nowhere near 10 acres (okay, roughly 1/20th of that), but I still
wonder what to do with all the crap I'm pulling out of the "garden". I'll
have to check into open burning. Failing that, I may have to buy a
chipper/shredder.

Yup! But bricks are much easier. You MIGHT want to consider stamped and
stained concrete. Looks like stone, much nicer surface.
We were going to put natural stone in there first, but had a terrible thing
happen. We discovered that the material they sold us to go under the stones
turned to pudding when it got wet. We had to rip them all out and start
over.
http://www.kizthiz.com/stoned.jpg
It was a LOT of damn heavy lifting and hard work.
Luckily it was before we put the mortar in. I decided since we were going to
put a table out there that I wanted a smoother surface than the natural
stone. So the chairs would sit flat.

:I'd like a 25-foot stepped waterfall along the left edge, if you can swing
it.

Oh yea, that should be pretty straight forward, except for the digging,
running the electrical and moving the stones that is!
A good place for stones is NOT your local landscaping outfit, but rather a
quarry.
The stones you saw in that photo, were under $20 If you bought them at a
nursery they would be a lot more than that,
I had put in rock gardens earlier in the year, wanted the stones to tie it
all in.

I'll figure it out though.

: Here's a photo page of the reclamation project:

I really like the way your work is progressing, The flowers you have found
are beautiful
It would be a shame to get rid of them. Maybe replant them alongside the
waterfall when you put it in.
The berries... not for me thanks. Snakes hide in berry bushes and they run
amok (bushes, not snakes) so quickly.

It's my phrase for uncovering a garden that looks like it's been let go for
about five years.

The good news - it seems that everything grows VERY well around here.
(Especially dandelions.)

You can thank the Pilgrims for the dandelions.... There were none in
North America until they wanted to brink a plant from the old world to
remind them of home. They picked the dandelion because it was hardy
and would survive the voyage, and the multiply fast.

No bodies or anything neat hidden in that jungle? Shucks... : )

That's odd. Wonder why...

Half the truck drivers are gay. Maybe the other half carries those tire
irons as protection against THEM.

Seriously, I stopped a trucker to check his credentials in northern
Maine (so far north we went south to get to Canada). He had the tire
iron handy right there on his door, which seemed a bit strange. He
said he makes a regular run up and down the eastern seaboard and like
all his fellow truckers, if they make a stop, the tire irons go in
with them because of all the gays who hang out in those places and
accost anyone who stops. Of course, as we all know... everyone's gotta
go some time...

My dad was on liberty in San Francisco, back right after WWII I guess,
when one followed him all over the place. Next to the Greyhound bust
station was an alley. Dad went down the alley (it was night) and when
the guy followed him into the alley... WHAM!!! BIFF!!!! SOCK!!!
POWEE!!! and dad left the alley to go catch his bus to get back to his
duty station. Unfortunately, the guy staggered out of the alley all
torn up and bloodied, screaming like a banshee, right into the arms of
the Shore Patrol. Needless to say, pop didn't catch his bus. So, he
called his duty station and his CO drove down the coast to get him
out. Meanwhile, the cops cut him loose and put him on a bus. So, he
got in trouble for the "fight", and for not being in jail when his CO
got there to bail him out. Something about scrubbing jeeps with a
toothbrush and painting the flagpole.  In Syracuse, NY, back around
1966, rolling gays in "fairy circle" was where the beer money was....
they had plenty and the drunks had already spent theirs. (Or so I
heard...)

Having been through both (The Okie F-4 in 98 and last year's Florida
'canes), I tend to agree. I'd rather sit through a hurricane, which is
exactly what I said when I moved back to Florida after the F-4.

We got 17 inches of rain in June so everything is already flooded. Here
in central Florida we're a bit stressed over the rain Dennis promises,
but today's been nice and sunny thus far.

My 13 year old niece is in Pensacola right now visiting her dad. We were
going to go pick her up yesterday but at this point, traffic is
impossible to get through in or out of there. Her dad promised to take
her to a shelter.
Let's keep our fingers crossed for everyone in Dennis' path!

What F4 are you talking about in 1998? We had a F5 May 3rd of 1999, and a F4
May 8th of 2003. They were 3 F3's in 1998. There was also the F2 that hit
Moore in October of 1998. Can you help me out here, I am lost?

Spike - 10 Jul 2005 21:32 GMT
Don't panic, Don. As a graduate of HS in Ft Walton Beach in 66, I
couldn't tell you what levels hit us. I do know the house my folks
were looking at with the private dock on the bay and guest house,
disappeared in 67.

I have been through some hurricanes, big and small, including one that
hit when we lived on Cape Cod, went out to sea and came back and hit
us again back around 1961. And I've been through some mighty big
typhoons, monsoons, gales, blizzards, forest fires, and lots of
earthquakes, including a 7.6 earthquake in Portugal in 1981.... talk
about an amusement park ride!!!!! Even seen schools closed in Ft
Walton Beach area for snow. No matter where you live, there is some
weather situation to contend with.  It doesn't really matter when it's
over whether it's  F3 or F4 to the person who loses their home or a
loved one. When you decide to live in areas prone to those things, you
accept what comes..... and you make darn sure your insurance is up to
date....
