...lust for the new Shelby GT 500, that is. Financially it's probably going to be a stretch, but I figure in about a year from now I could swing it. I already feel guilty about wanting to replace my black 93 GT though. I bought it new (my 3rd black GT) and have put 182,000 enjoyable miles, but the new Mustang has really got me excited. You'll get all the looks and then you can decide if you want to spring for the power and other performance upgrades down the line. I was in a similar situation. I was planning to just pick up the cleanest low-miles '93 I could get my hands on, throw in a blown 351, Tremec, and other assorted go-fast/turn-fast/stop-fast goodies and call it a day. But the new Mustang's styling convinced me that I really like the return to the classic lines. Money isn't really an issue, but the prospect of paying some parasite dealer a fat premium over MSRP because of an artificial "short supply" just rubs me the wrong way. So I'll probably go the "roll your own" route. That's heresey. Why don't I just buy used front and back pieces for my '93 LX, glue snakes all over it, and call it a Cobra? Hell, I "might" get Cobra performance parts someday, too. No, I won't drive a car that looks like something it's not. Nobody said anything about passing it off as a real Shelby. Same concept as all those outfits hawking "Elanor" kits for 60's fastbacks. I like the way the Shelby body kit looks on the new 'stang, but there is absolutely no way I'd consider paying the usurious prices that the dealers are going to gouge from people who've "got to have one." And it's not even a money issue. I can afford a GT500 or even a GT, but it just rubs me the wrong way that the dealers are gouging the enthusiasts who've helped to keep this car alive for 40 years. But the fact that I can't afford one doesn't mean that it would be okay or even a justifiable protest to slap Shelby pieces on my own car. I don't know... Then you are certainly free to leave your buggy bone stock. There's nothing to "get" here other than your intolerance of other people's views. That said, if the local dealer isn't trying to tack on $10-20k to the price, I might just buy a "real" GT500. It's not the absolute price that bothers me, but the fact that some opportunist (with Ford's tacit agreement) is able to pad their pockets at the enthusiast's expense. I think the initial feeding frenzy will push the price of the GT500 fairly high but after that is over they will fall to the $50k range. The same thing has happened to the Ford GT. I just returned from the DC Auto show and the Ford rep said the production run will be between 7,000 and 14,000 units. I hope it is the latter. The sticker price they quoted to me was slightly over $40k for the coupe and ~$50k for the convertible. I wish they had the convertible there. I have to resize them when posting to Photobucket and I should have resized them differently to retain better color and detail. It is the first Mustang to really excite me since 1989. If they make enough (>10,000, IMO) I think the price will settle down to something reasonable. I bet the first 2,000-3,000 go for big money though. Also, I took these pictures just for you. With a DSLR the ISO can be adjusted to take low light pictures and the Sigma 20mm lens is also a very good low light lens. The lighting at this years show wasn't very good. Also, the displays weren't as good as last years. Mercedes' display just plain sucked. They didn't even bring any "E" class cars. In general, the majority of sedans are just so damn boring. If it weren't for the badges on them you would swear they all came from the same designer. Ford did have a pretty nice looking small SUV named the Edge and I really liked the Fusion. I had not seen it before the show. Even my wife liked it and she dislikes SUV's. It really is targeted toward the younger crowd and the teenagers and young adults in our family love it. If they made a convertible and had a 400+ hp engine I would seriously consider buying one. DC should put that car into their showrooms ASAP. IMO they would sell as good as the Mustang if they were priced right. |
